Hospice volunteers play a vital role in supporting our patients and their families by providing companionship, emotional support, and practical assistance as they navigate the final stages of life. They offer respite to caregivers, assist with daily tasks, and help ensure patients' comfort and well-being. Volunteers work under the guidance of the Volunteer Coordinator, maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to the organization's policies and procedures.
Essential Duties:
- Companionship and Emotional Support: Volunteers spend time with patients, offering a listening ear, engaging in conversation, and providing emotional support. They may read to patients, play games, listen to music, or simply be present to offer comfort.
- Assisting with Daily Tasks: Volunteers can help with meals preparation, light household chores, running errands, shopping, or assisting with pet care. They can also help with tasks like writing letters, making phone calls, or helping with mail.
- Providing Respite for Caregivers: Volunteers offer caregivers a chance to take a break, allowing them to attend to other needs or simply recharge.
- Administrative Support: Volunteers can assist with tasks like filing, shredding, or answering phones in the hospice office.
- Bereavement Support: Volunteers may offer bereavement calls, visits, and memorial service assistance.
Qualifications:
- Compassion and empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail and the impaired
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks or functions
- Ability to maintain and protect patients' confidentiality and right to privacy
- Meets all health requirements set by Interim HealthCare, if applicable
- Proof of valid driver’s license
- Completion of hospice volunteer training and orientation program (provided by hospice organization)
