Welcome to our Volunteering program
VOLUNTEERING PROCESS
The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department offers a wide variety of ways for volunteers to be involved with and benefit animals in need and the Shelters as well with your invaluable time.
To be able to volunteer with AWD you need to SIGN UP for an account on this website or LOGIN into an existing account.
Because this volunteer program is a platform offered by the City of Albuquerque and activities will take place in City facilities, it is required from volunteers to submit a basic set of consent and liability waivers and other forms to be approved to start their volunteer journey, which are:
L2 Background check w/o MVD
Official form of identification
Photo release waiver
Animal Welfare Liability waiver
Animal Welfare History Check
Animal Welfare Code of Conduct & Ethics acknowledgement
The completion of these six basic QUALIFICATIONS is mandatory. Without any one of these, the website won't allow you to respond to any of the AWD opportunities, so make sure you start your process by completing all of them. To submit all of these, go to the Qualifications section of your profile and complete them from there. Here is a quick tutorial on How to submit qualifications.
When you send the request for a background check, please make sure you click on the link right under the title and also click on the selection button that mentions that is the way to link the background check to your profile. The link will take you to a secure 3rd party website where you have to fill out your details. The other button will tell us that you have sent your information and act accordingly.
Any and all of the information provided is protected by the privacy policies you agree to when you sign up for an account, and must be provided in truth with your legal name, otherwise some parts of the process might take an even longer time and require you to re-submit your information.
Please note that the two qualifications that are a request to process (Background check and Animal Welfare History Check) may take up to 15 business days to be approved. Your patience is appreciated while we get to your request as these processes are not completed by AWD staff at all.
The qualifications that are signed waivers and upload of your form of identification are approved immediately but might be subject to review, if necessary.
While you wait for qualifications to be approved, you can start learning the ins and outs of volunteering at the shelter by signing up for our Animal Welfare Volunteer Orientation
Below is a chart that summarizes the different levels of pet care, the qualifications required to participate in those levels of care, and the different opportunities associated with the levels of pet care. Most of the qualifications required for each level of pet care have an online or in-person training to complete.
General Shelter Opportunities
Enrichment Construction East/ West
Other events
Foster Caregiver Opportunities
For the online trainings you will need to create an account on a different site of ours. When you do, please register with your legal name. This needs to match with the ID you submit and the name provided on your volunteer profile. For instructions and troubleshooting Teachable click HERE.
Intermediate and advanced levels of care trainings are dependent on the basic level, so please refer to the chart to see what you need to learn for each level, in which order and which activities are available with that level of training. Every time you complete a level you will receive a sticker to go on your Volunteer Badge that you can also use as proof of qualifications.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Hopefully this section helps you out figuring out the most questions asked and the topics that can create some confusion.
Q1. I submitted a file and I keep getting an email saying I need to re-submit my qualification. What does it mean?
A1. The file you uploaded is probably not an appropriate document to submit for qualification Use the above Proof of qualification table to ensure you are uploading the document with the correct contents on the title field.
Q2. I don't have any PDFs, I never got any files when I completed my class. What should I do?
A2. Digital certificates aren't always sent automatically. You can request the file you need by sending an email to awdvolunteer@cabq.gov . You will receive the file after our staff confirms that you have indeed already gone through that training. If what you need is a file from our Training Center, you can go back and re-download the certificate from the listed courses in your Teachable account. Again, please make sure you have the right certificate for the specific qualification you're looking to get approved.
Q3. The chart has titles that show "[REDACTED]" on it. How am I supposed to know what it exactly says?
A3. We are protecting the whole title for safety reasons. You can take the class at the Online Training Center at any time to get your own certificate, given you have the right previous qualifications, and then submit it. The staff in charge of approving the qualifications will know the whole title. You only have to worry about the last words displayed on the chart.
Q4. I have my old badge and it doesn't have any room for stickers or anything. Can I still use that one?
A4. Please request the new Badge, as it has an area for your stickers that serve as qualifications. This is a new standard that helps everyone: you to show what you can do within our shelters, our staff to verify you're in the right area to work, and the public to identify you as a volunteer.
Q5. This system is too complicated, why do we have to go through all of these qualifications hassle?
A5. We want to acknowledge the hard work and knowledge that goes into being a volunteer. Not everyone can take on these responsibilities for free. By recording your qualifications on our website, we create a permanent record of your contributions.
The way tasks and shifts are divided helps us at the Animal Welfare Department understand where we need more focus, how your generous time helps the animals, and provides important data for the city's budget planning. Your cooperation in this process supports our animals and staff in many ways.
We also want to make sure you receive the recognition you deserve. By sharing your hours and qualifications as per the guidelines, you help us gather the information we need. Please keep submitting your hours!
Q6. I don't know how to use PDFs because I only use my phone. What can I do?
A6. The easiest way is to request your badge and the correct stickers and you can take a picture of it at your convenience. If your badge doesn't have your full name, when you take a picture, please do so next to an official form of ID, as that should be sufficient proof. Remember you're protected by the privacy agreements you signed when you got an account. Alternatively, while you’re on site you can ask the Community Engagement team for support. They will give you the proof of qualification you need that has your name on it. Take a picture with your phone and upload that picture for the qualification needed.
Q7. Well, I still don't have any of this, but I have your emails. Can I send a screen capture that shows those emails that say I took the class?
A7. No, we will not accept screen captures of emails under any circumstance. You can reply to said email to request the PDF. Only PDF documents or badge pictures are accepted. Word documents are not an option. The description on every opportunity’s listing mentions you should request proof of class completion, so please do that while you're still near staff, or, if you’re away, email them later.
If you still have questions or continue having issues with qualifications, please email awdvolunteer@cabq.gov This is the direct contact with the website managers who can provide more detailed answers.
