Volunteers Make ABQ CiQlovía Happen!
During the week leading up to CiQlovía, we partner with the International District Healthy Communities Coalition (IDHCC) for BUILD WEEK. Build Week is an outdoor activity that we do Monday through Saturday before the big day. By using street furniture, outdoor seating, parklets, landscaping, pavement painting for bike lanes and crosswalks, and energizing public space with lively programming and local art, we will utilize temporary changes in the built environment to enhance the area and highlight the need for more safe streets infrastructure.
How will volunteers help out?
Volunteers will have a variety of opportunities at CiQlovía Build Week 2024. Each role will have at least a morning and an afternoon shift. Volunteers will be provided with necessary materials and will be expected to complete shifts without supervision.
We encourage you to sign up to work the shift with friends or coworkers! Just send them the link to this page.
We will reach out to registered volunteers closer to the date of the event with additional details.
What and how?
Build Week Volunteers will:
- Check in with Build Week Coordinators, Bernadette (915-887-7140) and Skye (505-312-2690) to get details on the days builds. From there the Coordinators will direct you to the project.
TENTATIVE Schedule (schedule is subject to change based on weather and equipment)
- Monday: prep the street, prep placemaking items (e.g. lumber for furniture, pallets, etc)
- Tuesday-Friday: street painting, bench-building, crosswalks, bulb outs, murals, outreach
- Saturday: clean up, finishing touches, outreach
- Activities to support can include:
- Quick builds: repurpose pallets and lumber to create outdoor furniture
- Street painting: use temporary paint to design a crosswalk, create a beautiful art mural, or help create a temporary bike lane
- Rest stops: help create signs and items for the events rest stops
- Photo booths: help design photo booth backgrounds and items
- Clean up: help clean up street; tidy any litter, glass, weeds, and/or trash from street
- Outreach: help us canvas the neighborhood to spread the word about the event and/or to come out and help
- NOTE -- you don't have to do all of these, and you won't have to do any of these necessarily to completion --just contribute however long you can! :) you can switch from activities also!
CiQlovía is the Albuquerque version of the global phenomenon known as ciclovía or open streets. The word refers to events where city streets are closed to cars and opened up to people on foot and on bike, outdoor exercise classes, shopping, live music and other activities.
