The Friends of the Public Library is looking for enthusiastic and energetic new volunteers to join us as Volunteer Cashiers in our Bookshop and at our Monthly Book Sale. We welcome volunteers to this team who are comfortable working with electronic point-of-sale systems and managing a large volume of transactions.
Shifts available
Bookshop
Monday to Saturday
10:15am to 2:15pm
A minimum of one shift per week in the Bookshop for three months is required
Monthly Book Sale
Second Saturday of every month
Morning: 9:30am to 1pm
Afternoon: 12:30pm to 3:30pm
A commitment of at least one shift per Monthly Book Sale for three months is required
Tasks
Tasks will vary but include:
- Collecting payments and make change
- Processing credit card transactions
- Answering the Bookshop phone
- Greeting customers
- Answering questions
- Straightening up the sales floor and the Bookshop
- Packaging up purchases
Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Friendly and helpful attitude
- Willingness to help a diverse customer base
- An ability to count cash
- A general understanding and an ability to communicate the Friends of the Public Library’s mission
- Prior cashier experience preferred, but not required
Requirements
- Volunteers must complete the volunteer orientation
- Additional cashier and guest services training is required
- Volunteers age 18 and older are welcome
- A background check is required for this position
