Who We Are

The mission of New Mexico Friends of Foster Children is to meet identified needs of children and youth who experience state or tribal foster care across New Mexico in order to strengthen their sense of community and help them thrive.

As a study on the outcomes of children who grew up in foster care states, “children who leave care continue to struggle in all areas (education, employment, income, housing, health, substance abuse and criminal involvement) compared to their peers from the general population.” (Source: SciencedirectWe offer a variety of programs, funding basic needs beyond state-provided support and educational supports as well as common childhood activities, equipment, and experiences.

What We Do

New Mexico Friends of Foster Children helps provide the things that help foster kids be kids. We help foster kids be kids by paying for sports or camp fees, buying a bike or an instrument for band, paying for tutoring or helping a child go on a school trip. Think of what is important for a child to grow and flourish and our donors help make that a reality for children in foster care in New Mexico. We currently have four programs: Expanding Horizons - Funds items and experiences that are fundamentally a part of growing up. Designed to meet the needs and interests of individual children. Examples of our work include covering the cost of bicycles, museum/camp fees, tutoring, martial arts classes, sports fees/equipment, and musical instruments. It’s Your Birthday! - Celebrates each young person’s special day. With this new program, children and youth in care receive gifts or gift cards tailored to their interests as well as a book based on their age on their birthday. Summer Fun - Helps children in care stay active and have fun. Past awards include museum passes, day trips to national parks, wading pools, outdoor games, and art supplies. Style and Fit - Provides assistance with clothing needs of foster children/youth by providing $150 shopping awards. This program empowers children in care by giving them ownership and choice in clothing. Scholarships - Assists with expenses related to both living and attending college or trade school.
