Who We Are
Native Health Initiative (NHI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of Native American and Indigenous communities in New Mexico. Founded in 2005, NHI prioritizes community engagement, cultural sensitivity, and health promotion. We collaborate closely with tribal leaders and community members, offering programs that address physical activity, mental health, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention. NHI also empowers Indigenous youth through mentorship and leadership development. Our unique approach emphasizes Loving Service (the human-to-human element of wanting to serve others), striving to reduce health disparities and promote holistic health within Indigenous communities. NHI is a beacon of health equity and cultural preservation.
What We Do
Native Health Initiative is committed to improving the health and well-being of Native American and Indigenous communities. In pursuit of this mission, NHI engages in various activities, including community-based programs, education, and outreach. We promote healthy living by addressing issues like physical/mental wellness, community connectivity, youth leadership building and strengths-based approaches to community building. Our programs include Running Medicine, Healers of Tomorrow, Breathe Tradition, Not Addiction, Summer Internships, and Community Asset Mapping. NHI's comprehensive efforts aim to enhance the overall health, resilience, and cultural vitality of Native communities.
