New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum

Who We Are

The New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum uses the lessons and personal stories of the Holocaust, other genocides, and New Mexico’s diverse history to educate and inspire communities of upstanders. Founded in 1998 by Holocaust survivor Werner Gellert, his wife Frankie, and fellow survivor Juliana K. Lerner, NMHIM is dedicated to educating New Mexico students and the wider public about the dangers of allowing hatred, bigotry, and intolerance to go unchecked.

What We Do

The museum currently offers exhibits on the Holocaust, propaganda, and the genocide of Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire; additionally, we have rotating exhibits on other topics relevant to our mission.

Our education outreach programs reach hundreds of middle and high school students in Albuquerque each year. We host field trips, where students come to learn from a passionate volunteer docent, as well as get the rare chance to hear directly from a Holocaust survivor or survivor-descendant. Our education team works directly with local high schools, training students on research and exhibit design in preparation for opening their own exhibit here in the museum. We also create professional development trainings for local teachers, empowering them to teach the history of the Holocaust and other difficult subjects with tools they can take directly to their classrooms, including lesson plans.
