Who We Are

What started as a simple idea became a global literacy movement. The first Little Free Library book-sharing box was built in 2009 in Wisconsin. Today there are 100,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all 50 states and 108 countries, from Argentina to Zambia. The Little Free Library nonprofit organization is at the heart of this phenomenon. Our growing network shares our mission to inspire a love of reading, build community, and provide book access for all.

Since Little Free Library hit the scene in 2009, amazing things have happened:

  • More than 165 million books have been shared through registered Little Free Libraries, profoundly increasing book access for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Thousands of neighbors have connected for the first time, building stronger and friendlier communities.
  • Since it began in 2016, our Impact Library Program has provided more than 1,000 Little Free Libraries at no cost to communities where they’re needed most.
  •  Our volunteer stewards have shown awe-inspiring creativity, building Little Free Libraries that look like robots, castles, submarines, treehouses, and more.

What We Do

Our staff is dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections. We help community organizations, businesses, and individuals around the world start and maintain Little Free Library book exchanges. Watch the video below to get a 30-second introduction to how Little Free Libraries work, and how you can start one, too!

We provide ongoing support to Little Free Library volunteer stewards, offering free library-building instructions, an online store with pre-built library models and kits, access to free or discounted books, and an e-newsletter full of ideas and advice. We also maintain a world map of registered Little Free Library boxes to help people find and share books wherever they are.

You may have noticed that Little Free Library is located in Wisconsin - a bit further north than other organizations you may be involved with. We were thrilled to be invited to work alongside the City of Albuquerque in an effort to bring even more book-sharing boxes to your community! Don't let our distance keep you from getting started - check out the opportunities to get involved below.
