Opportunities From: One Albuquerque Volunteers

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it! There are hundreds of kids in New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential!

Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to create positive change in our community by matching youth with adult mentors to build powerful friendships. Volunteers tell us that being a mentor is one of the best experiences that they have ever had. It’s also not as time consuming as they thought it would be!

Our Mentor 2.0 program is tailored for working professionals ages 21+ who hold an associates degree or equivalent work experience (or higher). You will be matched with a high school student at South Valley Academy. Through weekly remote messages and once-per-month get togethers at the school, you'll help your mentee prepare for high school graduation and develop their college and career readiness!

In the Mentor 2.0 program;

We ask that mentors message their mentees at least once a week (using a secure, online platform) and commit to volunteering for at least a year. You will get together with your mentee once every 4 to 6 weeks at their high school for an evening event that is organized and hosted by BBBS staff. You are not alone in this. Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Match Support Specialist and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

In the Community-Based program;

We ask that mentors see their mentees for at least four hours each month and commit to volunteering for at least a year. Outings can be similar to activities that you would do with your friends: Go to the movies, play board games, go out to eat, or just hang out. It’s that simple! You are not alone in this process! Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Match Support Specialist and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

You don't need to be an expert to make a lasting impact - you simply need to show-up.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Mexico has partnered with Lutheran Family Services to create a new youth-serving mentorship program. Through our Refugee Youth Program we are creating positive change in our community by matching young refugee students with adult mentors to create powerful mentoring friendships that help refugee youth achieve their best possible outcomes!

The mentors (aka Bigs) provide their refugee youth mentees (aka Littles) with social, emotional, and educational support. Together, the Bigs and Littles experience mutual learning and cultural integration that creates a ripple effect of positive change in our community.

As a mentor in the Refugee Youth Program you will...

Be matched with a refugee youth who is new to the United States to help them feel welcomed and supported in their new community.Spend 4 to 6 hours per month together, based on your schedule and availability.Do fun activities together, like hiking, crafts, sports, exploring Albuquerque, and other activities you both enjoy.Help your Little build confidence, practice English, learn about life in the US, and discover opportunities in their new home.Experience meaningful cultural exchange while making a lasting difference in a young person's life.

No special experience is required, just consistency, kindness, and a willingness to show up. Big Brothers Big Sisters staff will provide mentorship training, resources, support, and guidance throughout your journey as Big and Little.

Mentors in the Refugee Youth Program must be at least 18 years of age. We ask for a one-year volunteer commitment when you are matched with your Little. Mentors must pass a background check, provide fingerprints, and complete an interview before being matched with a Little.
