Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (Main Library)Read to the Dogs
Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to support and promote this important Library service. Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story, creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the program area. You can read more about it here. Why dogs? The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10 week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers. How can I participate in this program with my dog?All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups: Southwest Canine Corps Alliance of Therapy Dogs Warm Hearts Network High Desert Therapy DogsPlease visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group. After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form). Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from library admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov. City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you. A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the eleven (11) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are. If you have any further questions, please contact your Library Branch's Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteer: Hoffmantown Neighborhood ABQ Neighborwoods Tree PlantingJoin Tree New Mexico as we help grow Albuquerque's urban forest in the Hoffmantown neighborhood on September 12, 2026 Whether you're a first-time volunteer or a longtime tree planter, we'd love to have you join us. No experience is necessary—our trained Team Leaders will provide all the guidance, tools, and support you need. Together, we'll plant trees that help create cooler neighborhoods, cleaner air, and a healthier, more beautiful Albuquerque for generations to come. Volunteers will be assigned to a small team led by an experienced Team Leader. Teams may walk or carpool between planting locations depending on the neighborhood layout. Tree New Mexico will have everything prepared in advance, including pre-dug planting holes, trees, mulch, hoses, and water. This is an active outdoor volunteer opportunity that may include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting trees weighing up to 15 pounds. Depending on volunteer turnout, teams may plant up to eight trees during the event. Volunteers should plan to spend approximately 4 hours at the event. Please bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat, and wear closed-toe shoes. Staying hydrated and protecting your skin from the sun is especially important while working outdoors, so we encourage you to come prepared for the weather. If you have a green Tree New Mexico T-shirt, we'd love for you to wear it. A limited number of shirts will also be available at the Welcome Table. For everyone's safety, please leave pets at home. Children ages 11 and older are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian, and youth ages 15 and older may participate as adult volunteers. Tree planting takes place outdoors and will proceed in most weather conditions. If severe weather affects the event, participants will be notified of any changes. We'll email the exact meeting location, sign-in information, and event details approximately two weeks before the event. If you have accessibility needs or questions about the physical requirements of the planting, please contact us in advance and we'll do our best to help. Come ready to get your hands dirty, meet fellow volunteers, and make a lasting impact—one tree at a time! Questions? Volunteer: Volunteer Wellness Check-In - For all of us!Hello, volunteers! No matter where you volunteer or what cause you support, you’re invited to join us. The NAMI Albuquerque Community Volunteer Wellness Check-In is a simple weekly space for volunteers across our community to slow down, connect, and take a moment for themselves. Whether you volunteer with the City of Albuquerque, United Way, a school, faith community, nonprofit, neighborhood organization, or somewhere else — you are welcome. We may watch a short mindfulness or inspirational video, reflect together, and ask a few simple questions: What did you notice? What surprised you? What can you take with you into your weekend or the week ahead? And most importantly: How are you doing today? There’s no pressure and nothing to prepare. Come when you can, participate as much or as little as you’d like, and leave when you need to. You spend so much time helping others. This is a little time for you. Hosted by NAMI Albuquerque and open to all volunteers in our community. Thank you for what you do. Take care of you, too.

Volunteer: African American Sharing Hope Conversation FacilitatorsNAMI Albuquerque is seeking Black/African American community members to volunteer as facilitators for NAMI Sharing Hope: Mental Wellness in the Black/African Ancestry Communities. Sharing Hope is a free, three-part community conversation series created by NAMI to provide supportive spaces for Black/African Ancestry communities to talk openly about mental health and wellness. The program uses storytelling, videos, guided dialogue, and community resources to explore mental health challenges, wellness, coping, healing, recovery, and support. What will volunteers do? Sharing Hope facilitators will help lead welcoming, culturally relevant conversations with members of Albuquerque’s Black/African American community. Facilitators encourage participation, listen to community experiences, guide discussion using NAMI-provided materials, and help participants learn about available mental health and community resources. You do not need to be a therapist or mental health professional. We are looking for community members who care about mental wellness, are comfortable engaging with others, and want to help create spaces where people can have honest conversations about mental health. The goal is to bring Sharing Hope conversations to places where our community already gathers—including churches, community organizations, campuses, barber shops, neighborhoods, family spaces, and community events throughout Albuquerque. Volunteer Commitment Sharing Hope is a three-part conversation series, rather than an ongoing weekly support group. NAMI provides the program materials and resources facilitators need to help guide the conversations. Help Us Bring Sharing Hope to Albuquerque If you are passionate about Black mental health, community connection, reducing stigma, and helping others discover resources and hope, we would love to have you help us build Sharing Hope in Albuquerque. Volunteer: Doggie Day Out
You can make a life-changing difference for the animals at AWD Animal Welfare by giving them the joy of a break from the shelter while they wait for their forever homes. Our pets are looking for caring community members to help them relax, recharge, and shine their brightest for potential adopters — and you can be that helping hand (and heart!). For our Doggie Day Out Opportunities we are looking for compassionate people who can take a shelter pet out and about for a day on the town. Enjoy activities like: • Taking a dog on a relaxing hike • Hanging out together at a dog-friendly café or brew pub • Bringing them home for a calm afternoon and a comfy nap. Doggy Day Outs help our pups experience joy, reduce stress, and give them valuable exposure that helps them get adopted faster. Your time means the world to an animal waiting for their forever home. Help us make their day a little brighter — and make yours a little warmer in return. Organization: AWD Animal Shelter

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (International District Library)Read to the Dogs
Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to promote this important Library service. All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the nine (9) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are. Organization: International District Library Read to the Dogs

All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the nine (9) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.
