Volunteer: Defend Potential by Mentoring (Community-Based Program)

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it! There are hundreds of kids in New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential.

Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to create positive change in our community by matching youth with adult mentors to build powerful friendships. Volunteers tell us that being a mentor is one of the best experiences that they have ever had. It’s also not as time consuming as they thought it would be.

In the Community-Based program;

We ask that mentors see their mentees for at least four hours each month and commit to volunteering for at least a year. Outings can be similar to activities that you would do with your friends: Go to the movies, play board games, go out to eat, or just hang out. It’s that simple! You are not alone in this process! Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Match Support Specialist and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

Interview, training, and background check will be required.

What do SRP volunteers do?

Teen volunteers are a vital part of our summer programming. Volunteers help with all types of work, from signing up participants, to stamping Summer Reading Logs, and handing out weekly prizes. They may also be asked to help with the day-to-day business of the library, as well as contributing their own special skills on an as-needed basis. Special events are where our volunteers will really shine. Volunteers may help with offering and/or assisting during arts & crafts or story time programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with generating publicity by sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

Volunteer: Feline Right at Home – Stressed Cat Behavior Modification Training – East and West

Description

The Feline Right at Home Program is designed to help shy, fearful, under-socialized, or behaviorally stressed cats become more comfortable with people and better prepared for adoption. Volunteers in this specialized role receive training in feline behavior modification (bmod) techniques and low-stress handling strategies used in shelter environments. Participants learn how to read feline body language, recognize stress signals, build trust through choice-based interactions, use positive reinforcement and enrichment tools, and apply confidence-building exercises tailored to each cat’s needs. Volunteers also learn techniques for reducing fear, encouraging engagement, and creating positive associations with human interaction. Through calm, consistent sessions, volunteers play a critical role in improving cats’ emotional wellbeing, quality of life, and adoptability while documenting behavioral progress and sharing observations with staff.

To be able to respond to this opportunity you should have taken the Cat Behavior Training online and have had a Cat Shadowing session with a Senior Volunteer - and remember you have to upload your certificates obtained by the end of trainings as qualifications. For a more comprehensive list of our opportunities divided by pet, listings of the trainings needed to volunteer and all of the details about how to continue your volunteering process with us, please visit www.oneabqvolunteers.com/awd

After you submit your background check please email Jen Vossen at erniepyle@cabq.gov

What do I need to become a SRP volunteer?

Teens will need their own email separate from their parent or guardian's email.

City policy requires background checks for anyone aged 13+ before being considered to volunteer for the Library. There is no cost to the applicant. Background checks must clear before volunteers attend orientation in order to volunteer during the program.

What do SRP volunteers do?

Teen volunteers are a vital part of our summer programming. Volunteers help with all types of work, from signing up participants, to stamping Summer Reading Logs, and handing out weekly prizes. They may also be asked to contributing their own special skills on an as-needed basis.

Schedule: The summer reading volunteer program runs from May 30th until July 25th with a bonus volunteer opportunity on August 1st. The Ernie Pyle Library is open Tuesday-Saturday 10:00am- 6:00pm.  We would love if volunteers could work a minimum of one shift per week for the duration of the library’s Summer Reading Program, but we are very flexible and will work with your schedule.

Special events are where our volunteers will really shine. Volunteers may be asked for assistance during arts & crafts or storytime programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

Yay you made it all the way through!!  When you respond please tell us what your favorite book is!

The Ernie Pyle Library is not ADA accessible because the historic building and grounds include steps, narrow passages, and small spaces. The building was Ernie and Jerry Pyle’s 1,129 square foot home built in 1940. It is a National Historic Landmark and it is on the State, City and National registers of historic places. The closest ADA accessible Libraries include the San Pedro Library, South Broadway Library and International District Library.

Volunteer: Camp Adventure

This summer, you can make a real difference in a child’s life! Camp Adventure is looking for volunteers to support children with disabilities through games, creativity, and connection.

Volunteer roles include helping with operational things like facilitating check-in, activity facilitation for things like water games and crafts, and being a counselor that works directly with a group of children.

Timing-wise, we ask for full day availability, as people coming and going through the day can be challenging for the children. Timing runs between 7am-2:30pm depending on volunteer role.

Online training is required online before coming, and any volunteers over the age of 18 must pass a background check. Volunteers must be a minimum of 15 years of age by the start of camp, June 8.

The final location of camp is kept private for safety reasons until potential volunteers have been background checked/screened. For planning/consideration purposes, it will be taking place near I-40 and Wyoming.

Volunteers that respond to the need here on ABQ One will be sent a follow-up link with our volunteer screening form, which then follows to a BG check for those over 18. We will also provide a sign-up specific to roles and days after the initial screening application/BG check.

2026 Summer Reading Program Teen Volunteer (Ages 13-18)

Unearth a Story! – May 30th, 2026 to July 26th, 2026 -- Main Library

Volunteers should be prepared to attend a mandatory orientation and to work a minimum of one shift per week for the duration of the library’s Summer Reading Program which runs from May 30th through July 26th.

Special events are where our volunteers will really shine. Volunteers may help with offering and/or assisting during arts & crafts or story time programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with generating publicity by sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

What do I need to become a SRP volunteer?

All volunteers must be able to attend an orientation session in order to be considered for the SRP volunteer program. If you cannot attend the orientation date, please contact the volunteer coordinator at (505)768-5136.

City policy requires background checks for anyone aged 13+ before being considered to volunteer for the Library. There is no cost to the applicant. Background checks must clear before volunteers attend orientation in order to volunteer during the program.

All volunteers must complete orientation before Summer Reading begins! Main Library's orientation date is: May 23rd, 2026 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Contact Main Library with questions:

No one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant found in storm water runoff? Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. Volunteer: Learn the Streets

The Backdrop
The City of Albuquerque is spending enormous resources pushing human suffering from block to
block in a cruel destabilizing cycle that destroys trust, medications, survival gear, and pathways
to healing. “Learn the Streets” is a direct counter to those “sweeps”; instead of treating the
unhoused as a problem to be moved out of sight out of mind, we are partnering with our
unhoused neighbors to design the housing, behavioral health, and support systems that would
actually end homelessness in Albuquerque humanely and sustainably.
What We’re Doing
On Saturday, June 20th, 2026, we’re mobilizing a dozen local organizations and 50-75 volunteers
across 6-8 encampment sites from 9am-1pm to distribute care packages and food, build
relationships through conversation, and listen to what people actually need, asking simple human
questions like “What’s hardest right now?” “What’s worked/not worked?” and ”What would
actually help?” Our goal is not one-time outreach; it’s relationship, reconnection, and long term
follow through. After the outreach we’ll invite all those we encounter to each of those 6-8 sites to
eat together and to join in facilitated conversation. Then on Saturday, June 27th volunteers will
gather back together 11am-1pm to turn what we learned into actionable community and policy
proposals.

Volunteers Needed:
• 50-75 volunteers
• Site leads and note takers
• June 20 and June 27 participation

Donations Needed:
• 500 Care packages
• Food for 6-8 sites
• 10-15 tables, 100-150 chairs
• $5k-7k for stipends supporting lived-
experience site leaders

Your courage, honor, and dedication have shaped the way you care for others. As a veteran, you understand what it means to stand alongside someone during their most vulnerable moments—and that shared experience uniquely prepares you to bring comfort to fellow veterans at the end of life.

At Gentiva Hospice, we believe no veteran should face their final journey alone. As a Veteran‑to‑Veteran Volunteer, you can continue your legacy of service in a deeply meaningful way.

As a Veteran Volunteer, You Can: Offer companionship and reassurance to veterans in their final days, helping them feel seen, valued, and honored. Share stories and understanding that only another veteran can provide—creating a powerful bond rooted in shared experience. Provide dignity, respect, and emotional support during end‑of‑life care so veterans feel safe, supported, and never forgotten.

Your military service may be complete, but your impact does not end. Through your presence, compassion, and lived experience, you can bring comfort during one of life’s most sacred transitions.

Your service continues—through kindness, connection, and honoring those who have served.

If you feel called to support fellow veterans in their final chapter, we invite you to join our dedicated team of Gentiva Hospice volunteers.
