Opportunities From: One Albuquerque Volunteers

Volunteer: Los Altos Park - mutt mitt volunteer

No one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant found in storm water runoff? Pet waste left on sidewalks, streets, and lawns washes into storm drains and then to the nearest water body without treatment. Pet waste pollutes surface water by contributing harmful bacteria and nutrients impacting water. The solution is easy, pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly! Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Volunteer: Santa Fe Village Park Adopt-a-Park

Grab a book at the Taylor Ranch Public Library, put on your hiking shoes for a stroll around nearby Petroglyph National Monument, let your pups roam in the dog park, bring the kids to the playground, AND adopt Santa Fe Village Park to keep all these things clean and accessible! What more could you want from a volunteer opportunity!

Community organizations, businesses, and private citizens may adopt a park. The program is flexible enough to allow organizations, business or individuals to choose a location and level of commitment that works best for them, their family, or their staff. The best part—you can adopt a park in your neighborhood!

Contribute directly to the beautification of our City, starting with the area that matters most to you! Volunteering in City of Albuquerque parks is a great way to help our community shine!

Parks can be adopted collaboratively, or by a single family or organization. Families and organizations that adopt a park in-whole (with a minimum commitment of two years) will be recognized with the placement of a sign in the park to recognize and celebrate their contribution.

Parks are a place for everyone to enjoy, and the maintenance of our parks are a place for everyone to pitch in. Even if you don’t commit to adopt a park for two years, you can still sign up here to log the hours you spend doing your part to keep Albuquerque beautiful.

This program provides volunteers with excellent opportunities to gain valuable work experience, make a connection with the community, and meet new people. Plus, you can bring your family and pets to accompany you in your project.

Volunteering in City Parks

We offer plenty of rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, small groups, and large groups. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us, if you would like to collaborate with us for your project. We have all the tools—we just need your time and energy.

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer - Erna Fergusson

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?
Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo
County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with
an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story,
creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their
reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit
quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the
program area. You can read more about it here.
Why dogs?
The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10
week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading
fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported
by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater
confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school
and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes
through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.
How can I participate in this program with my dog?
All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog
volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:
Southwest Canine Corps
Alliance of Therapy Dogs
Warm Hearts Network
High Desert Therapy Dogs
Please visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.
After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above,
you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card
or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above
listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from Library Admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov.

City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval,
you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the six (6) participating Libraries.
Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.
Thank you for considering the Library and Read to the Dogs for your volunteer service!

Volunteer: Sierra Sunset Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

Volunteer: Volunteer from Home: Write Friendly Letters to Seniors!

SEND SMILES AND SUNSHINE: BECOME A VOLUNTEER LETTER-WRITER TODAY!

Are you passionate about spreading joy and brightening someone's day? Do you have a knack for writing friendly letters? Are you looking for a virtual team project? Join our dedicated team of volunteers and make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors in aged care homes here in Albuquerque, across the United States and worldwide.

WHAT WE DO

We’re an all-volunteer organization that mails cheerful, personal, handwritten letters and cards to elders in care facilities and senior programs. Since April 2020, our dedicated volunteers have sent countless letters and cards in 30 languages, spreading joy and connection around the globe!

WHAT WE OFFER A chance to make a direct and positive impact on the lives of seniors. Flexibility to volunteer from anywhere, anytime, year-round as an individual or with a team. A special program to verify service hours for students and professionals seeking community service credits. (Separate registration is required.) Tips and guidance for crafting personal and meaningful letters available on our website and social media platforms. An inclusive environment where volunteers are encouraged to share their own uplifting stories and experiences without making assumptions about the recipient's background or abilities. All ages and abilities are welcome!  IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR VOLUNTEERS Ideal volunteer: Writes unique, friendly, conversational letters to connect with the reader and make them feel special. We offer ideas on our blog and social media, along with sample letters below! You’ll mail your handwritten letters to one of our partner facilities. After you register with us and write some letters, log on to our user portal to choose a destination. We operate on a two-week cycle, so please don't sign up for letters until you have the time and supplies to mail them. Every two weeks - August 18, September 1, September 15, September 29, etc. - our mailing list resets, and new requests for letters become available for you to claim. Expenses: Postage, writing materials, envelopes. You can send multiple letters in one large envelope to save on postage. We offer a stamp fund for seniors and students (ID required). You won’t know the name of the reader. Address letters as “Dear Friend.” This is not a pen pal program; while you may occasionally receive a response, most seniors don’t have the physical ability or resources to write back to you. We have no staff, physical office, or phone. Please email volunteer Lindsay for support. HOW YOU CAN HELP Join our team of volunteers and commit to writing letters on an ongoing basis. Focus your message on sharing a bit about yourself to make each letter unique and special. Seniors tell us that these personal stories are their favorite part of the letter! Limit affirmations and general well wishes, as they can come across as impersonal when overused. Avoid sensitive topics such as religion, holidays, health and politics. Keep your message positive! While handcrafted cards are welcome, they are not required; your handwritten message is what matters most. Our partner facilities in New Mexico are requesting letters in English and Spanish. Create a group activity for your friends, employees, co-workers, classroom or club members. Team up with a public library to host a letter-writing event. Post our flyer on social media and community bulletin boards at libraries, cafes, bookstores, stationery and craft stores, and apartment complexes. Volunteer: Zuni Park - Mutt Mitt volunteer

Volunteer: Loma Del Rey Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

Volunteer: Ouray Dog Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

Volunteer: Schedule an Exotics Handling Orientation

Sometimes, city shelters end up with exotic animals that need a place to stay. These animals might come in for all sorts of reasons, and since they need special care, the shelters have to be ready to handle them. That’s where volunteers come in—they’re crucial for helping out with these unique pets.

Volunteers play a big role in providing the extra attention and care these animals need. Whether it’s feeding them, cleaning their habitats, or just spending time with them, every bit of help makes a huge difference. If you’re interested in getting involved, this Exotics Handling Orientation is a great way to support the shelter and learn more about these fascinating animals.

In this session, we’ll dive into the care of exotic animals at our two different shelters. Over on the Eastside, you'll get to know all about a variety of exotic pets and where they’re kept. We’ll cover things like access codes, what materials you’ll need, and other important details. On the Westside, it’s all about farm animals. We’ll go through how these animals are housed and what you need to know to take care of them. You’ll also get the scoop on security codes and supplies. This session is all about making sure you’re up to speed with everything you need to know for both types of animals.

When you respond to this opportunity the Community Engagement team will get an email notification with your request and coordinate with a Senior Volunteer or the appropriate staff member to schedule a time for your session that works with your availability. Stay alert to your emails so communication doesn't get lost and you can continue on your journey to complete the qualifications needed to finally schedule some time to volunteer with the cats at the shelter and respond to Exotics care opportunity shifts.

If you haven't, please determine on your profile your availability. You can do so by clicking on the circle menu with your initials at the top right of this page and then choose the "Edit profile" option. When the page loads you will find the availability section on the right side when you scroll down, right under the "Change Password" section. Just check the boxes on days and times you are available to volunteer. This setting will give our Volunteer Coordinator a better idea when they start looking for your session. These checkboxes can be changed at any time. You can also leave notes on your availability when you RESPOND to this opportunity in the "Additional notes" field.

After completing your shadowing session remember to request your Exotics Sticker that goes on your badge. You can also request your Volunteer Badge if you still don't have it.

Volunteer: U.S.S. Bullhead Memorial Park Adopt-a-Park

Not only is this park one of the largest and most popular in Southeast Albuquerque, but it also stands as a memorial to all the service members who lost their lives on the U.S.S. Bullhead during World War II. When you adopt this park, you are showing your love and appreciation for your neighbors, your community, and our service members who paid the ultimate price.

Trash pickup
Weed removal
Raking sand boxes
Sweeping walkways/sidewalks

Cleaning/wiping of playground equipment

Volunteer: Grecian Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

Many hospice patients love listening to live music. If you play an instrument, consider becoming a music volunteer. As a music volunteer, you’ll bring your instrument with you when you’re visiting patients. You can play some of your favorite songs for the patient, and you can also take some requests from the patient. Patients will love getting to relax and listen to their own private concert. If you prefer a larger audience, we can set you up at the facility to play for the residents. We will work with your schedule!
