ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Volunteer with ABQ RIDE and Adopt Your Neighborhood Bus Stop

ABQ Ride has nearly 2,700 bus stops citywide, with over 600 featuring shelters, located throughout neighborhoods across Albuquerque. These stops provide a safe and comfortable location for bus riders as they wait for their ride. Each bus stop is a high-visibility point of connection between the City and those who live in it. These are gathering places for hundreds of people every day, and they require regular maintenance and oversight.

With your assistance, we can all help keep our community spaces clean, promote ridership, and encourage alternative/sustainable transportation options. We welcome individuals, families, companies, civic groups, schools, church groups, and youth groups interested in becoming part of the Adopt-A-Stop program. Everyone benefits from this environmentally conscious program – residents, property owners, businesses, visitors, and transit riders.

Our Adopt-A-Stop volunteers are provided with everything they need to safely assist with maintaining their bus stop. These volunteers are also the eyes and ears for our transit department--they have a direct point of contact to notify when additional graffiti and litter removal assistance is required from the city.

Tasks include welcoming guests supporting the Children's Zone helping with vendors spreading cheer and jumping in wherever the holiday magic is needed.

Tasks include welcoming guests supporting the Children's Zone helping with vendors spreading cheer and then on Sunday afternoon helping us tuck the whole Holiday Market in for its long rest until next year. This sign up is for the second weekend of our two weekend Holiday Market celebration. We are looking for cheerful and hard working elves to help us close out the season with lots of love and sparkle for our ABQ community.

We really really need help for that big Sunday 1PM to 5PM clean up shift. After two full weekends of magic our staff elves are going to be extra sleepy and ready for a long winter nap. If you have the energy and heart for it this is the time to swoop in as the hero of the season.

Tasks include welcoming guests supporting the Children's Zone helping with vendors spreading cheer and then on Sunday afternoon helping us tuck the whole Holiday Market in for its long rest until next year. When you arrive swing by the Info Booth and ask for Ching so I can get you checked in and placed for your shift.

Getting here is easy
We offer a free Park and Ride to help volunteers and guests avoid parking stress. You can park for free at the ABQ Zoo then hop on the free shuttle that drops you right at the Rail Yards. Shuttles run from 9AM to 5PM. Bike riders can also enjoy our free Bike Valet on site.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?

Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story, creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the program area. You can read more about it here.

Why dogs?

The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10 week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.

How can I participate in this program with my dog?

All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine Corps Alliance of Therapy Dogs Warm Hearts Network High Desert Therapy Dogs

Please visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.

After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form). 

Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from library admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov. 

City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the eleven (11) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

There is the possibility of moving indoors if necessary.

The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10 week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.

 

How can I participate in this program with my dog?

All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine Corps Alliance of Therapy Dogs Warm Hearts Network High Desert Therapy Dogs

After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from Library Admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov. 

City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the six (6) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

Having a human there watching over them when they feel insecure can make the process much calmer instead of panicked or stressful.  You must be familiar with handling cats and dogs, be able to lift at least 20lbs alone and more with help, and be able to bend and kneel frequently. The University of New Mexico Track and Field Team is looking for community members to help facilitate our home meets in the Albuquerque Convention Center this upcoming January and February . Multiple volunteer opportunities are available, across four different weekends here in ABQ with varying types of roles. Some roles are sedentary, some mainly on your feet and some with a mix of both.

MoGro Mobile Grocery is a nonprofit mobile grocery based in Albuquerque. Our main goal is to make nourishing food accessible to more families in central New Mexico by removing barriers of distance and cost that can inhibit access to healthy eating. We also work to buy as much of the food we distribute from small local farmers to make sure that as much of the funding spent on these programs is returned to the communities we serve in multiple ways.

We help to make healthy food more accessible by working with partners like Tribal communities, Presbyterian Community Health, Three Sisters Kitchen, CNM, and UNM Truman Health Center to provide their clients and community members with bags of fresh, healthy, and local food. With large volumes of produce going so many different directions, we first bring it all to Roadrunner Food Bank, where we rent space to pack our bags and store our food, to sort, pack and redistribute.

This is where YOU come in! We need help packing our produce and grocery bags for our partner organizations. We pack every Tuesday from 2:30 - 6:30pm at Roadrunner Food Bank.

Pet waste pollutes surface water by contributing harmful bacteria and nutrients impacting water. The solution is easy, pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly!

Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Pro bono work is a professional responsibility and an individual ethical commitment to give back to the community.

Volunteer attorneys and other legal professionals increase our capacity by taking on cases, providing technical assistance, and sharing their expertise. When an attorney agrees to take on a case with NMILC, the relationship does not end there. We provide ongoing technical assistance, mentorship, and language support for pro bono cases. NMILC’s malpractice insurance covers attorneys providing pro bono legal support with us. Pro bono attorneys and legal professionals help with a variety of case types:

Representing Youth Who Have Been Abandoned, Neglected, or Abused in State Court

Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) is a status available to some young people and provides a path to lawful permanent residence (a “green card”) for that child. In order to be eligible for SIJS, the child must be subject to a predicate order from a state court in which the court finds that the child has been abandoned, abused, or neglected by one or both parents.

We rely on assistance from pro bono attorneys who are willing to represent the petitioner in state court proceedings. These cases most often include sole custody, dissolution of marriage, kinship/guardianship, and emancipation proceedings. Typically, these are default cases, and they do not require a hearing. We provide support, templates, and step-by-step instructions to help you, and no family law experience is required. Each case takes between 10 and 30 hours over the course of a few months, on average.


Work with immigrants in detention.

Our programs at the Cibola/Torrance Detention Centers take place approximately once each month. We provide pro se assistance, consultations, screenings, and legal presentations to folks in detention. Non-attorney volunteers support this program by giving presentations, helping applicants fill out forms, and providing logistical support. This is a full-day commitment, usually on a weekday.

Volunteers must also be fluent in Spanish or a priority language.

Support asylum seekers.

Pro Bono attorneys and non-attorney volunteers work with pro se asylum applicants to complete their paperwork for their asylum cases. Roles at the asylum workshop include doing client intakes (for volunteers with previous experience/training), helping manage the flow of the workshop, assisting with childcare for clients, doing on-site translations. These workshops occur approximately once per month in-person.

All volunteers will be trained on I-589 forms prep and Asylum 101 prior to volunteering. We require volunteers for the asylum workshop to be fluent in Spanish and willing to be flexible with your role.

Support immigrants in your area of expertise.

In conjunction with other community organizations, NMILC is developing a network of attorneys with a wide range of expertise whose work intersects with issues of importance to immigrants. These attorneys could act as a resource for other attorneys or provide consultations to community members as needed.

We are particularly looking for people who can advise on employment law, powers of attorney and other life-planning documents in case of deportation, and civil rights. We’re looking for a friendly, dependable volunteer to join our kitchen team and help keep things running smoothly! Your support ensures that local seniors enjoy clean, safe, and welcoming meals every day.

Barelas Senior Center

Time Commitment:

Flexible Schedule
Biggest need:

· Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

· 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM

Your Role Includes:

Washing dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment

Helping keep the kitchen area clean and organized

Supporting staff and fellow volunteers during meal service

Being part of a kind, welcoming community 

Dress Code:

Sneakers or shoes with rubber grip

No tank tops

Hair net (provided) required

No prior experience needed!
Training is provided on-site — just bring your willingness to help.

Volunteer: Chelwood Park Mutt Mitt Volunteer

Volunteers needed to replenish mutt mitt stations (doggie bag stations) to help encourage pet owners to clean up after their pet.  Volunteers are responsible for obtaining replenishment of bags at Park Management office.  Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and ball cap.  Volunteers will be issued their own key to the mutt mitt station.
