Volunteer: Teen Library Volunteer Summer Reading Program 2025

2025 Summer Reading Program Teen Volunteer (Ages 13-18) Color Our World! – May 31st, 2025 to July 26th, 2025 South Broadway Library Thank you for considering volunteering your time at the South Valley Library in Albuquerque!

Teen volunteers are a vital part of our summer programming. Volunteers help with all types of work, from signing up participants, to stamping Summer Reading Logs, and handing out weekly prizes. They may also be asked to help with the day-to-day business of the library, as well as contributing their own special skills on an as-needed basis. Volunteers should be prepared to attend a mandatory orientation and to work a minimum of one shift per week for the duration of the library’s Summer Reading Program which runs May 31st through July 26th, 2025.

Special events are where our volunteers will really shine. Volunteers may help with offering and/or assisting during arts & crafts or story time programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with generating publicity by sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

What do I need to become an SRP volunteer?

All volunteers must be able to attend an orientation session in order to be considered for the SRP volunteer program. If you cannot attend the orientation date, please contact Brooke Holland at (505)768-4970. After the orientation, a set schedule will be made for each volunteer depending on the library's needs and the teen's availability.

City policy requires background checks for anyone aged 13+ before being considered to volunteer for the Library. There is no cost to the applicant. Background checks must clear before volunteers attend orientation in order to volunteer during the program.

All volunteers must complete a brief orientation before Summer Reading begins!

Orientation simply goes over expectations, policies, and procedures while volunteering on site.

Call to schedule a time to meet with us to complete this orientation anytime between Tuesday, May 20th - Saturday, May 24th 10 am - 5 pm.

What else do I need?

A criminal background check will be required. City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

IMPORTANT: Once you have read all of the above, please contact Amber D. at 505-764-1742 to discuss opportunities and availability.

**Please note: Based on the New Mexico Child Labor Laws, youth ages 13-15 may only volunteer for up to 4 hours per week during the academic school year; and, when school is out, for up to 20 hours per week.**

Arroyo Del Oso Park Highlights

Wide-open rich and green grassy field space to enjoy a variety of fun activities with a basketball and tennis court. It is one of the largest parks in the city of Albuquerque- the walking bike path curves around the soccer field and the playground is a fun safe structure for kids of all ages to play. The program is flexible enough to allow organizations, business or individuals to choose a location and level of commitment that works best for them, their family, or their staff. The best part—you can adopt a park in your neighborhood!

Contribute directly to the beautification of our City, starting with the area that matters most to you! Volunteering in City of Albuquerque parks is a great way to help our community shine!

Parks can be adopted collaboratively, or by a single family or organization. Families and organizations that adopt a park in-whole (with a minimum commitment of two years) will be recognized with the placement of a sign in the park to recognize and celebrate their contribution.

Parks are a place for everyone to enjoy, and the maintenance of our parks are a place for everyone to pitch in. Even if you don’t commit to adopting a park for two years, you can still sign up here to log the hours you spend doing your part to keep Albuquerque beautiful.

Volunteer: Zuni Park - Mutt Mitt volunteer

No one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant found in storm water runoff? Pet waste left on sidewalks, streets, and lawns washes into storm drains and then to the nearest water body without treatment. Pet waste pollutes surface water by contributing harmful bacteria and nutrients impacting water. The solution is easy, pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly!

Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Volunteer: Calling All Musicians

Many hospice patients find comfort and emotional relief in listening to live music, as it has the power to bring peace and foster a deeper sense of connection during challenging times. If you have a musical gift and enjoy playing an instrument, consider becoming a music volunteer. This rewarding role allows you to share your talent with those in need, creating an enriching experience not only for the patients but also for you as the performer.

As a music volunteer, you’ll bring your instrument with you during visits to hospice patients, offering them the opportunity to enjoy your music in a personal setting. You can play some of your favorite songs or take requests from patients, making the experience even more meaningful and tailored to their preferences. Whether it’s a calming melody or an uplifting tune, your music can provide a comforting escape and a source of joy for individuals who may be feeling isolated or distressed.

For those who prefer to perform for a larger group, we can help you arrange sessions in common areas or group settings within the facility. Volunteer: Request and schedule a Clinic Volunteer Orientation - East

Here is the right place to start your educational journey and assist the veterinary staff in the care of post-surgical animals and to help with evening clinic duties. This side of the shelter is fast-paced and calls for a volunteer with good animal handling skills and quick learning skills. Volunteer: Loma Del Rey Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

Volunteer: Schedule an Exotics Handling Orientation

Sometimes, city shelters end up with exotic animals that need a place to stay. These animals might come in for all sorts of reasons, and since they need special care, the shelters have to be ready to handle them. That’s where volunteers come in—they’re crucial for helping out with these unique pets.

Volunteers play a big role in providing the extra attention and care these animals need. Whether it’s feeding them, cleaning their habitats, or just spending time with them, every bit of help makes a huge difference. If you’re interested in getting involved, this Exotics Handling Orientation is a great way to support the shelter and learn more about these fascinating animals.

In this session, we’ll dive into the care of exotic animals at our two different shelters. Over on the Eastside, you'll get to know all about a variety of exotic pets and where they’re kept. We’ll cover things like access codes, what materials you’ll need, and other important details. On the Westside, it’s all about farm animals. We’ll go through how these animals are housed and what you need to know to take care of them. You’ll also get the scoop on security codes and supplies. This session is all about making sure you’re up to speed with everything you need to know for both types of animals.

When you respond to this opportunity the Community Engagement team will get an email notification with your request and coordinate with a Senior Volunteer or the appropriate staff member to schedule a time for your session that works with your availability. Stay alert to your emails so communication doesn't get lost and you can continue on your journey to complete the qualifications needed to finally schedule some time to volunteer with the cats at the shelter and respond to Exotics care opportunity shifts.

Volunteer: Advanced Dog Walking - West Side

Advanced Dog Walking is designated for those volunteers who have completed the Advanced Dog Handling class. You are free to walks dogs with an assessment color designation of Green, Blue, and Yellow. To walk dogs with an assessment color designation of Orange, you must complete a one on one with a member of the Behavior Team.

Advanced Dog Walkers can also participate in the Shy Dog Program and Potty Brigade.

Dogs may be assigned a yellow or orange dot for many reasons, including their behavior in the kennel, behavior on leash, behavior during SAFER exam, or history. Sometimes you will see why right away: the dog will be very shy, or it will jumpy or mouthy, or will behave aggressively towards other dogs. In other cases, the dog may have been assigned a yellow or orange dot for a reason that isn’t immediately obvious in the dog’s behavior.

Behavior is always an interaction between the dog, the handler, and the environment. This means that different people may have different experiences of the same dog, and this does not mean that one of the people is “wrong.” In order to make the most accurate predictions about a dog’s likely future behavior, we collect as much information as we can about how the dog has behaved in different places, with different people, and at different times, and we look for patterns of repeated or similar behavior. The color codes represent our best guess about how a dog is likely to behave in the future, both in the shelter and once adopted into a home, and with a variety of handlers.

To be able to respond to this opportunity you have to had gone through the Dog Handling online training, the Hands-on Dog Behavior in person class, at least one Dog Shadowing session, the Advanced Dog Handling Class and have had uploaded the correct certificates for each of these qualifications.

Volunteer: Dog Walking - West Side

Daily walks and exercise help more rescue and shelter dogs find forever homes by giving them physical and mental stimulation and teaching them valuable skills such as socialization and leash etiquette. They also enjoy your attention and the opportunity to get some fresh air.

Every pooch needs physical exercise, and shelter dogs are no exception. In fact, structured walking programs at shelters and rescues help make dogs more adoptable by giving them exercise and stimulation, teaching them about leash etiquette, providing them with opportunities to bond with humans and to work on basic skills such as loose leash walking and sit.

This Dog walking opportunity involves walking the dogs who have a blue or green dot located on their kennel card. Each dog taken out should get at least a half hour of your time, if possible.

To be able to respond to this opportunity you have to had gone through the Dog Handling online training, the Hands-on Dog Behavior in person class, at least one Dog Shadowing session and have had uploaded the correct certificates for each of these qualifications.

Volunteer: Mesa Verde Park - mutt mitt volunteer

Volunteer: U.S.S. Bullhead Memorial Park Adopt-a-Park

Not only is this park one of the largest and most popular in Southeast Albuquerque, but it also stands as a memorial to all the service members who lost their lives on the U.S.S. Bullhead during World War II. When you adopt this park, you are showing your love and appreciation for your neighbors, your community, and our service members who paid the ultimate price.

Community organizations, businesses, and private citizens may adopt a park.

Even if you don’t commit to adopt a park for two years, you can still sign up here to log the hours you spend doing your part to keep Albuquerque beautiful.

This program provides volunteers with excellent opportunities to gain valuable work experience, make a connection with the community, and meet new people. Plus, you can bring your family and pets to accompany you in your project.

Volunteering in City Parks

We offer plenty of rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, small groups, and large groups. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us, if you would like to collaborate with us for your project. We have all the tools—we just need your time and energy.

Trash pickup
Weed removal
Raking sand boxes
Sweeping walkways/sidewalks

The Monthly Book Sale is a major source of funding for the Friends of the Public Library, funding that goes directly to supporting the vital programs of the Library.

The Monthly Book Sale is on the second Saturday of each month. Set-up is on Monday and Tuesday the week before the sale and clean-up is on Monday and Tuesday following the book sale. Volunteer shifts are 10:30 am to 1:30 pm or noon to 3 pm.

There will be a training session prior to the volunteer’s start date. All work will be done with guidance from the Administrative Coordinator and support from experienced volunteers.

Volunteers should be: able to bend, lift, reach, and squat and able to lift 20 lbs without strain.

Set-up and Clean-up Tasks Include:

Moving books from shelves in the FOPL storage area to the community room (and vice versa) Placing books onto carts  Moving carts filled with books Taking down, folding up, and stacking portable tables  Organizing books on shelves and tables Taking discarded books to the recycling and donation areas

We are an engaged and welcoming volunteer team and would be thrilled to have some new members. Beverages and water are available for all volunteers. We usually have some snacks, too. Free outdoor lot parking is available for volunteers during their shifts.

Plus, volunteers get the first look at new books and media with the opportunity to purchase items at a discount.

A criminal background check will be required.  City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency.  There is no cost to you.

Belen Harvey House History

Belen's Harvey House operated from 1910 to 1939. It had a first-class dining room and a lunchroom with a large horseshoe-shaped marble counter. The Harvey Girls lived upstairs, as did the dorm mother and the office manager and his wife. In the 1940s, it briefly reopened during World War II, with many Harvey Girls coming out of retirement to serve troop trains. In the 1950s, it became the Santa Fe Reading Room for railroad employees, serving as a breakroom and dormitory through the 1970s. Boarded up and readied for demolition, a campaign by citizens of Belen saved the building from being torn down. In 1982, the Santa Fe Railroad donated the building to the City of Belen and hundreds of volunteers began restoring the building.

Volunteer: Reyna Luz Alley Activation - Wood Chip Mulching and Primer/Mural Painting

CABQ gives us about 30 minutes notice when chips are on the way. If you are interested in being on our urgent mulch spreading text list, please let us know.

We are also looking for volunteers able to bring exterior primer and any artistic skills you may have! We currently have permission to begin painting murals on several walls.

**Alley is behind the address listed on this form. Enter alley either from Southern or Trumbull.

We have the call out to several neighbors and volunteer groups, as we need to clear the alley by spreading the chips ASAP so that cars are able to enter and exit the alley (our neighbors use this alley most every day)

Why are we mulching the alley park? https://youtu.be/iC7GQHp9-8Q?si=SNpelId7gSUzUE2E As we create this new alley path/park and encourage more of our neighbors to begin reclamation on their alleyways, adding wood chips immediately cools the surface temperature, helps the soil retain moisture, and improves soil quality over time.

You can text 505-227-5963 - I can respond on my breaks from work today. But any interested volunteers can also just bring a shovel, rake, buckets or a wheel barrel to the alley between Southern/Trumbull and 700 Cardenas and Valencia and start spreading chips on the spots which are currently bare.

Please join us in increasing the number of open space, neighborhood cooling, alley parks in our city!
