Position Summary: This volunteer role is designed for experienced Animal Welfare volunteers who are willing to lead a Shadow Session as part of the onboarding process for new volunteers. The Shadow Session lasts 1–2 hours and takes place on a predetermined date and time. During this session, you will guide a new volunteer through a typical shift in one of the designated areas: general population cats, general population dogs, exotics, surgery recovery, or clinic. Your role is to provide insight, answer questions, and help new volunteers feel confident and prepared in their responsibilities.

Major Job Duties: New volunteers will be assigned to you to complete their Shadow Session in the area that you also volunteer (ex: Senior dog walking volunteer will complete Shadow Session with new dog walking volunteer). During your session, you will cover check-in, where to get supplies, where the pets are located, how to use information white boards, how to read kennel cards for pertinent information (ex: available date), where pets can/can’t be taken, and any other topics you think are pertinent all the way up to check-out. Once the Shadow Session has been completed with you, refer new volunteer to CE team for badge and completion sticker(s). If there was an email chain to set up the Shadow Session, send reply via that email chain to indicate that new volunteer has completed Shadow Session.

With this position, you can choose to have new volunteers complete their Shadow Session with you and continue with you as their mentor. Sometimes, city shelters end up with exotic animals that need a place to stay. These animals might come in for all sorts of reasons, and since they need special care, the shelters have to be ready to handle them. That’s where volunteers come in—they’re crucial for helping out with these unique pets.

Volunteers play a big role in providing the extra attention and care these animals need. Whether it’s feeding them, cleaning their habitats, or just spending time with them, every bit of help makes a huge difference. If you’re interested in getting involved, this Exotics Handling Orientation is a great way to support the shelter and learn more about these fascinating animals.

In this session, we’ll dive into the care of exotic animals at our two different shelters. Over on the Eastside, you'll get to know all about a variety of exotic pets and where they’re kept. We’ll cover things like access codes, what materials you’ll need, and other important details. On the Westside, it’s all about farm animals. We’ll go through how these animals are housed and what you need to know to take care of them. You’ll also get the scoop on security codes and supplies. This session is all about making sure you’re up to speed with everything you need to know for both types of animals.

Now that you have gone through the Feline right at home  online training, and you have uploaded the correct certificate for your qualifications, it's time to put into practice what you learned. Remember that for the system to approve the certificate required for this session you should also have 20+ hours submitted and approved of Cat Cuddling inside a shelter.

In this session with a Senior Volunteer and/or Cat behaviorist, you will be shown and guided through the different areas at the shelter for the Fraidy Cat program, learn the details about each area, learn how to provide feedback on the areas that require it, and get to handle and interact with cats and provide care, relief and enrichment for them. Please reserve 1-2 hours for this session.

Don't forget to really put into practice what you know about behavior, body language, stress levels, and anything and everything you wish to have clear and totally mastered to have full confidence on being able to work with different cats at different chances in the future.

This class is for all dog volunteers who have completed their initial and advanced training and would like to work with higher arousal level dogs, other known as Orange dot or unassessed dogs who are usually in the care of staff only. This is a hands-on class, where volunteers will receive one-on-one coaching to improve their skills walking dogs with a variety of behavior challenges. Volunteers are encouraged to take this class more than once, as each session will be different depending on which dogs we work with.

Filling gallon bags with cat and dog food in preparation for the pet food pantry. May involve lifting and moving large bags of dog and cat food, sometimes over 40lbs. 

Please email awdvolunteer@cabq.gov before going to the West shelter facility for more instructions on where to find the gallon bags and food that needs to be bagged.

The Potty Brigade takes dogs out of kennel twice daily to allow house trained dogs to relieve themselves. We set up shifts in the morning and afternoon so they can go early before we open the shelter, and in the evening before closing. These schedules help the dogs keep a schedule and their kennels to stay clean for each shift.

For this opportunity you need to go through  the Dog Handling online training, the Hands-on Dog Behavior in person class and at least one Dog Shadowing session, and of course have already uploaded the correct certificates for your qualifications.

The Kitten Social Club is a fun and essential program designed to help young kittens grow into confident, adoptable cats. Volunteers in this role provide playtime, gentle handling, and positive interactions that are crucial for a kitten’s healthy development. Provide safe, gentle handling to help kittens become comfortable with people. Engage kittens in interactive play with toys to encourage exercise, confidence, and curiosity. Expose kittens to positive experiences such as petting, brushing, or being held.

To be able to respond to this opportunity you should have taken the Cat Behavior Training online, have had a Cat Shadowing session with a Senior Volunteer, and also have completed the Kitten Social Club Training offered online and remember you have to upload your certificates you obtained by the end of trainings as qualifications.

Please expect to be at the facility for at least 1-2 hours learning how to be safe taking dogs out of their kennels, knowing what to look for on kennel cards, and where you can find the equipmentnent you need.

During this time, you will be shadowing with one of our amazing senior dog volunteers who will go over basic dog handling with you and what a typical volunteering session looks like. Please expect to be at the facility for at least 1-2 hours learning how to be safe taking dogs out of their kennels, knowing what to look for on kennel cards, and where you can find the equipmentnent you need.

Exotics volunteering allows you to interact with, socialize and enrich the lives of our tiniest residents! You will work directly with rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and a variety of other small mammals, reptiles and birds!

Our shelter receives many donations on a daily basis.  We need assistance in receiving, sorting and distributing shelter and pet food pantry donations for the pets.

This opportunity is for volunteers to track any time spent counseling potential pet adoptions. This can be used for the counseling of adoptions for cats, dogs, or exotic pets.

This opportunity is to support the animals as they come out of sedation after surgery. Having a human there watching over them when they feel insecure can make the process much calmer instead of panicked or stressful.  You must be familiar with handling cats and dogs, be able to lift at least 20lbs alone and more with help, and be able to bend and kneel frequently. You will shadow with one of the senior volunteers for a surgery recovery session before being able to volunteer on your own. To set up the shadow session, email awdvolunteer@cabq.gov.

Having a human there watching over them when they feel insecure can make the process much calmer instead of panicked or stressful.  You must be familiar with handling cats and dogs, be able to lift at least 20lbs alone and more with help, and be able to bend and kneel frequently. This critical, life-saving opportunity provides care to the cats being treated for ringworm in the associated ringworm isolation area. Volunteers wear protective coverings on their body, feet, and hands. Kennel cleaning procedures will be explained when you begin volunteering. You will also be helping with treatment of ringworm cats by completing dipping treatments and bathing. Volunteers for the ringworm treatment opportunity should be comfortable with handling cats, be able to stand and bend, and be able to lift up to 20 pounds.

This position is for fosters or volunteers who are available to care for neonate puppies and kittens at their home overnight. The neonates will then return to the AWD nursery the next day. You must have the neonate care qualification completed by either taking the class given by AWD or being approved by the nursery lead and the Community Engagement team.

Educating New Mexico's students is critical to our mission. Each year, NMHIM welcomes hundreds of middle and high school students to the museum, where they receive a docent-led tour and a presentation by a Holocaust survivor or survivor-descendant. We are looking for passionate, dedicated individuals to join our docent team. 

As a docent, you will be trained to educate students using the museum's artifacts, exhibits, and collections. Tours typically last between 45 minutes to an hour. Tours will be assigned based on availability.

While we appreciate every person who wishes to volunteer at the Library, opportunities are sometimes limited. Please be aware that we may not have a volunteer position available at this time that suits your interests and abilities. If you are accepted as a volunteer, we may ask you to alter your duties to meet the changing needs of the Library. Additionally, if your work is no longer necessary or proves unsatisfactory, you may be released.

**Please note: Based on the New Mexico Child Labor Laws, youth ages 13-15 may only volunteer for up to 4 hours per week during the academic school year; and, when school is out, for up to 20 hours per week.**

We are looking for energetic and enthusiastic volunteers to h​elp customers at the Monthly Book Sale pack up and take out their purchases. The Monthly Book Sale is a major source of funding for the Friends of the Public Library, funding that goes directly to supporting the vital programs of the Library.

The Monthly Book Sale is on the second Saturday of each month (for example December 14th). Volunteer shifts are 9:30 am to 1:30 pm or 1​2:30 to 3​:30 pm.

Volunteers do not need to work every month, but we do ask that they are communicative and consistent with their scheduling.

No supplies are needed, but this is a demanding, physical task. You will be packing used books in boxes and bags. Then the books are taken through a backroom and up to customers via elevator (on carts or in bins) then loaded into the customers cars. Please wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. We have gloves and masks, as well as hand sanitizer.

The Friends of the Public Library is looking for enthusiastic and energetic new volunteers to join us as Volunteer Cashiers in our Bookshop and at our Monthly Book Sale. We welcome volunteers to this team who are comfortable working with electronic point-of-sale systems and managing a large volume of transactions.

NHI is seeking mentors for our Healers of Tomorrow (HOT) program. Mentors should be individuals in health professions (any specialty!- doctor, nurse, dentist, vet, therapist, traditional healer, medical student. etc). Mentors will be paired with a high school student interested in health careers. The program meets the first Saturday of the month from September 2026-May 2027 for three hours. Additionally mentors will be asked to check in once with their mentee each month (virtual okay). A brief volunteer mentor training will be held in August. ABQ Ride has nearly 2,700 bus stops citywide, with over 600 featuring shelters, located throughout neighborhoods across Albuquerque. These stops provide a safe and comfortable location for transit riders as they wait for their bus. Each bus stop is a high-visibility point of connection between the City and those who live in it. These are gathering places for hundreds of people every day, and they require regular maintenance and oversight.

With your assistance, we can all help keep our community spaces clean, promote ridership, and encourage alternative/sustainable transportation options. We welcome individuals, families, companies, civic groups, schools, church groups, and youth groups interested in becoming part of the Adopt-A-Stop program. Everyone benefits from this environmentally conscious program – residents, property owners, businesses, visitors, and transit riders.

Our Adopt-A-Stop volunteers are provided with everything they need to safely assist with maintaining their bus stop. These volunteers are also the eyes and ears for our transit department--they have a direct point of contact to notify when additional graffiti and litter removal assistance is required from the city.

We are in search of a volunteer who is a self-starter, has a valid driver's license and driver's insurance, and who has consistent access to a vehicle.

This volunteer would be transporting hardback books, and occasionally assemble metal storage racks to store said books. The books are stored in cardboard boxes that weigh ~20 pounds.

Ambassadors must be confident in their duties and environment. For this purpose, we have designed a comprehensive training to help you will the appropriate skills that will help you deal with any situation that may arise. We are conducting in-person training at the Alvarado Transportation Center at Central and 1st Street. With six different programs, training takes two days of four hours each for completion. When you are qualified to respond to this opportunity, you will get access to more detailed information and scheduling availability for the training. Initial spots for the program launch are limited. No one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant found in storm water runoff? Pet waste left on sidewalks, streets, and lawns washes into storm drains and then to the nearest water body without treatment. Pet waste pollutes surface water by contributing harmful bacteria and nutrients impacting water. The solution is easy, pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly!

Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Each week, Vets for Pets distributes dog and cat food, water, and basic pet supplies to families and individuals in need. We operate on two seasonal cycles: Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall. During our current Winter/Spring session, distribution begins promptly at 10:00 AM. When temperatures rise, we shift to an earlier start time to better serve the community and protect volunteers and participants from the heat.

Volunteers may meet us at 9:00 AM at 500 Wisconsin Street NE to help load and organize supplies, or meet us directly at the International District Library (7601 Central Avenue NE), where distribution begins promptly at 10:00 AM.

This is hands-on, community-facing work. You will help deliver essential resources, connect with pet owners, and ensure that families and their companion animals receive consistent support.
