Volunteer: Foster Breaks & Doggie Day Outs 2025

This New Year, you can make a life-changing difference for the animals at AWD Animal Welfare by giving them the joy of a break from the shelter while they wait for their forever homes. Our pets are looking for caring community members to help them relax, recharge, and shine their brightest for potential adopters — and you can be that helping hand (and heart!).

For Foster Opportunities we are looking for compassionate people who can welcome a shelter pet into their home for a short or long stay. You can choose what works best for you:

• Slumber Party Weekend: Enjoy a 1–3-nights sleepover and give a pet a fun mini-vacation outside the shelter.

• Full Foster Break: If you’re able to open your home a little longer, pets can enjoy a cozy month or longer foster stay. These breaks help animals decompress, show off their true personalities, and enjoy a peaceful home experience surrounded by love — even before they find their forever family.

Not Ready to Foster? Try a Doggie Day Out

If an overnight visit isn’t the right fit, you can still make a huge impact by taking a dog out for a few hours of fun and freedom.

Enjoy activities like:

• Taking a dog on a relaxing hike

• Hanging out together at a dog-friendly café or brew pub

• Bringing them home for a calm afternoon and a comfy nap Doggy Day Outs help our pups experience joy, reduce stress, and give them valuable exposure that helps them get adopted faster.

Whether it’s a day, a weekend, or a few weeks, your time means the world to an animal waiting for their forever home. Help us make their New Year a little brighter — and make yours a little warmer in return.

Volunteer: Request and schedule a Clinic Volunteer Orientation - East

Here is the right place to start your educational journey and assist the veterinary staff in the care of post-surgical animals and to help with evening clinic duties. This side of the shelter is fast-paced and calls for a volunteer with good animal handling skills and quick learning skills. Post-Surgery Clinic Volunteers move animals back to the main shelter after surgery, clean kennels, and maintain the cleanliness of the clinic during their shift. so we need you to know all the ins and outs of our facilities.

When you respond to this opportunity the Community Engagement team will get an email notification with your request and coordinate with a Senior Volunteer to schedule a time for your session that works with your availability. Stay alert to your emails so communication doesn't get lost and you can continue on your journey to complete the qualifications needed to finally schedule some time to volunteer with the Clinics at the CABQ Animal Shelters.

If you haven't, please determine on your profile your availability. You can do so by clicking on the circle menu with your initials at the top right of this page and then choose the "Edit profile" option. When the page loads you will find the availability section on the right side when you scroll down, right under the "Change Password" section. Just check the boxes on days and times you are available to volunteer. This setting will give our Volunteer Coordinator a better idea when they start looking for your session. These checkboxes can be changed at any time. You can also leave notes on your availability when you RESPOND to this opportunity in the "Additional notes" field.

After completing your orientation session remember to request your Clinic Volunteer Orientation certificate and/or the "Clinic" sticker that goes on your badge. You can also request your Volunteer Badge if you still don't have it.

Volunteer: Summer Reading Teen Volunteers 2026-Erna Fergusson Library

Summer Reading Teen Volunteer: Unearth A Story! -- May 30th, 2026 to July 25th, 2026

Erna Fergusson Library

What do SRP volunteers do?

Teen volunteers are a vital part of our summer programming.  Volunteers help with all types of work, from signing up participants, to stamping Summer Reading Logs, and handing out weekly prizes. They may also be asked to help with the day-to-day business of the library, as well as contributing their own special skills on an as-needed basis. Volunteers should be prepared to attend a mandatory orientation and to work a minimum of one shift per week for the duration of the library’s Summer Reading Program which runs May 30th through July 25th. With the exception of preplanned time needed for previously scheduled events.

Special events are where our volunteers will really shine.  Volunteers may help with offering and/or assisting during arts & crafts or story time programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with generating publicity by sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

What do I need to become a SRP volunteer?

All volunteers must be able to attend an orientation session in order to be considered for the SRP volunteer program. If you cannot attend one of the the orientation dates (Wednesday May 27th @6 or Thursday May 28th @5), please contact Tamara at ernafergusson@cabq.gov.

City policy requires background checks for anyone aged 13+ before being considered to volunteer for the Library. There is no cost to the applicant. Background checks must clear before volunteers attend orientation in order to volunteer during the program.

Your background check must be approved before you can sign up for a shift.

After reading the above, Please contact Tamara with questions and to discuss availability: ernafergusson@cabq.gov

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Albuquerque Public Library!
We are excited to work with you!

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer - Erna Fergusson

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?
Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo
County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with
an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story,
creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their
reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit
quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the
program area. You can read more about it here.
Why dogs?
The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10
week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading
fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported
by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater
confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school
and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes
through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.
How can I participate in this program with my dog?
All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog
volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:
Southwest Canine Corps
Alliance of Therapy Dogs
Warm Hearts Network
High Desert Therapy Dogs
Please visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.
After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above,
you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card
or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above
listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from Library Admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov.

City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval,
you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the six (6) participating Libraries.
Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.
Thank you for considering the Library and Read to the Dogs for your volunteer service!

Volunteer: Make a Difference in Albuquerque — Become an ALA Member Volunteer

Learn more about ALA and become a member at our website: assistanceleagueabq.org

Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community — using the skills and passions you've built over a lifetime? The Assistance League of Albuquerque (ALA) might be exactly what you've been looking for.

The Assistance League of Albuquerque is an all member-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit with over 60 years of philanthropic service to Albuquerque and the surrounding communities. We manage nine programs that serve our neighbors from newborns to seniors — providing school clothing for kids in need, comfort bears for children in crisis, food and supplies for the hungry and homeless, support for assault survivors, scholarships, and much more. With no paid staff, everything we do is powered by people like you.

Our member volunteers come from all walks of life — all united by a shared commitment to making Albuquerque a better place. Whether you have only a few hours a month or a whole lot of heart to give, there's a role here that fits.

How to Get Started
Membership begins with an Orientation — a welcoming introduction to ALA's mission, programs, and community. Registration is required before attending, so your first step is to submit a membership inquiry through our website. From there, we'll guide you through everything.

We recommend using our website directly and not the "respond" button on this page.

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (Central & Unser Library)

Read to the Dogs

Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to promote this important Library service.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?

Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story, creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the program area. You can read more about it here.

Why dogs?

The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10-week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes that, through this program, children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.

How can I participate in this program with my dog?

All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine CorpsAlliance of Therapy DogsWarm Hearts NetworkHigh Desert Therapy Dogs

Please visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.

After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

Additionally, the handler will need to pass a criminal background check. City of Albuquerque policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to a background investigation done by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at the Central and Unser Library! Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

You will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule an interview before you can start volunteering.

Volunteer: Adopt-A-Stop

Volunteer with ABQ RIDE and Adopt Your Neighborhood Bus Stop

ABQ Ride has nearly 2,700 bus stops citywide, with over 600 featuring shelters, located throughout neighborhoods across Albuquerque. These stops provide a safe and comfortable location for transit riders as they wait for their bus. Each bus stop is a high-visibility point of connection between the City and those who live in it. These are gathering places for hundreds of people every day, and they require regular maintenance and oversight.

With your assistance, we can all help keep our community spaces clean, promote ridership, and encourage alternative/sustainable transportation options. We welcome individuals, families, companies, civic groups, schools, church groups, and youth groups interested in becoming part of the Adopt-A-Stop program. Everyone benefits from this environmentally conscious program – residents, property owners, businesses, visitors, and transit riders.

Our Adopt-A-Stop volunteers are provided with everything they need to safely assist with maintaining their bus stop. These volunteers are also the eyes and ears for our transit department--they have a direct point of contact to notify when additional graffiti and litter removal assistance is required from the city.

Volunteer Requirements

Keep the bus stop area free of debris and litter Report damage to bus stop fixtures Light graffiti removal Inform ABQ ride about additional stop needs and maintenance Weekly stop maintenance

Interested? Questions? Comments? Come join your Adopt-A-Stop founder and coordinator Dwayne Baker every third Thursday of the month for an hour-long Q&A! Click this link or just point your camera at the QR code below!

Want to know which bus stops are adopted? This map indicates with yellow pins which bus stops volunteers have already stepped up to help ABQ RIDE maintain. By clicking on the map and zooming in with your scroll wheel you can also see which bus stops are still available. Adopted bus stops can also be adopted by more than one person, or group.

Volunteer: Spruce Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

No one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant found in storm water runoff? Pet waste left on sidewalks, streets, and lawns washes into storm drains and then to the nearest water body without treatment. Pet waste pollutes surface water by contributing harmful bacteria and nutrients impacting water. The solution is easy, pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly!

Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Do you love supporting animals?
Do you believe no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets?
Do you want to serve low-income and unhoused pet owners in the International District?

If so, we invite you to join us on Friday mornings.

During our current Winter/Spring session, distribution begins promptly at 10:00 AM. When temperatures rise, we shift to an earlier start time to better serve the community and protect volunteers and participants from the heat.

Volunteers may meet us at 9:00 AM at 500 Wisconsin Street NE to help load and organize supplies, or meet us directly at the International District Library (7601 Central Avenue NE), where distribution begins promptly at 10:00 AM.

This is hands-on, community-facing work. You will help deliver essential resources, connect with pet owners, and ensure that families and their companion animals receive consistent support.

Whether you can serve regularly or occasionally, your participation makes a real difference.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.

In a 10 week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.

How can I participate in this program with my dog?All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine CorpsAlliance of Therapy DogsWarm Hearts NetworkHigh Desert Therapy DogsPlease visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.

After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the eleven (11) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

IMPORTANT: Once you have read all of the above, please contact Josh R. at 505-768-4462 to discuss opportunities and availability.

Volunteer: Downtown Temporary Dog Park - Mutt Mitt volunteer
