Volunteer: Defend Potential by Mentoring (Community-Based Program)

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it! There are hundreds of kids in New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential!

Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to create positive change in our community by matching youth with adult mentors to build powerful friendships. Volunteers tell us that being a mentor is one of the best experiences that they have ever had. It’s also not as time consuming as they thought it would be.

In the Community-Based program;

We ask that mentors see their mentees for at least four hours each month and commit to volunteering for at least a year. Outings can be similar to activities that you would do with your friends: Go to the movies, play board games, go out to eat, or just hang out. It’s that simple! You are not alone in this process! Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Match Support Specialist and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

Interview, training, and background check will be required.

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (International District Library)

Read to the Dogs

Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to promote this important Library service.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?

Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story, creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the program area. You can read more about it here.

Why dogs?

The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10 week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.

How can I participate in this program with my dog?

All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine Corps Alliance of Therapy Dogs Warm Hearts Network High Desert Therapy Dogs

Please visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.

After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from Library Admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov.  City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the nine (9) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

Unearth a Story! – May 30th, 2026 to July 26th, 2026 -- Main Library

What do SRP volunteers do?

Teen volunteers are a vital part of our summer programming. Volunteers help with all types of work, from signing up participants, to stamping Summer Reading Logs, and handing out weekly prizes. They may also be asked to help with the day-to-day business of the library, as well as contributing their own special skills on an as-needed basis. Volunteers should be prepared to attend a mandatory orientation and to work a minimum of one shift per week for the duration of the library’s Summer Reading Program which runs from May 30th through July 26th.

Special events are where our volunteers will really shine. Volunteers may help with offering and/or assisting during arts & crafts or story time programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with generating publicity by sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

What do I need to become a SRP volunteer?

All volunteers must be able to attend an orientation session in order to be considered for the SRP volunteer program. If you cannot attend the orientation date, please contact the volunteer coordinator at (505)768-5136.

City policy requires background checks for anyone aged 13+ before being considered to volunteer for the Library. There is no cost to the applicant. Background checks must clear before volunteers attend orientation in order to volunteer during the program.

All volunteers must complete orientation before Summer Reading begins! Main Library's orientation date is: May 23rd, 2026 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Contact Main Library with questions:

Volunteer: Dash for the Trash 2026

Dash for the Trash is an exciting community event hosted by Keep Albuquerque Beautiful and the City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management Department, combining environmental stewardship, friendly competition, and outdoor recreation to help beautify our beloved Bosque.

This isn't your traditional cleanup! Participants will hit the trails on foot through designated areas of the Bosque with one goal in mind: collect as much litter as possible. Individuals and teams will compete to see who can remove the most trash and debris, with prizes awarded to the top individual collectors and the top-performing groups.

The competitive element adds a fun twist while highlighting an important message: every piece of litter removed makes a difference. Whether you're a seasoned cleanup volunteer or simply looking for a unique way to give back to your community, Dash for the Trash offers everyone an opportunity to make a tangible impact.

The Bosque is one of Albuquerque's most cherished natural resources and requires continual care and stewardship. By transforming a community cleanup into a friendly competition, we hope to inspire more residents to get outside, get active, and take pride in protecting our environment.

So lace up your shoes, gather your friends, and bring your competitive spirit. The more trash you collect, the better your chances of taking home a prize—and together, we'll make the Bosque cleaner and more beautiful for everyone

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (Main Library)

Read to the Dogs

Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to support and promote this important Library service.

After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the eleven (11) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

If you have any further questions, please contact your Library Branch's Volunteer Coordinator.

As a vigil volunteer, you provide a calm, comforting presence for patients and their families during their final hours. This may include sitting quietly at the bedside, offering gentle reassurance, or simply being there so families can rest knowing their loved one is not alone.

What This Role Looks Like: On-call availability: Vigil needs can arise at any time, so volunteers are asked to be flexible and responsive when called. Short-notice visits: You may be contacted when a patient is actively dying and a vigil presence is needed. Quiet companionship: Sitting bedside, holding a hand, reading softly, playing music, or maintaining a peaceful space. Support for families: Providing reassurance and a calming presence during a very emotional time. What We’re Looking For: Compassionate, reliable individuals with a heart for service Ability to be on call and available when needs arise Comfort with end-of-life situations (training is provided) Strong sense of empathy, respect, and presence Why It Matters:

Your presence can bring peace, dignity, and comfort in a person’s final moments—and provide immeasurable support to families when they need it most.

Training & Support:

All volunteers receive training and ongoing support from our hospice team. You are never alone in this work—you are part of a caring, dedicated community.

If you feel called to make a meaningful difference during life’s most sacred moments, we would be honored to have you join us.

We are seeking compassionate, dependable volunteers to join our Hospice Vigil Volunteer Team—a special group dedicated to ensuring that no one faces the end of life alone.

Volunteer: Summer Fixit Clinic Coaches

Calling all fixers, makers, and repair pros — we need coaches for our Summer FixIt Clinic!

Keep Albuquerque Beautiful, in partnership with Fuse Makerspace, is gearing up for our next Summer FixIt Clinic on Saturday, August 8, and we’re looking for skilled volunteers to help community members bring their broken items back to life.

At the FixIt Clinic, residents bring household items like bikes, electronics, small appliances, sewing projects, jewelry, and more to learn how to repair them alongside experienced coaches. It’s a hands-on opportunity to share skills, reduce waste, keep usable items out of the landfill, and help build a more sustainable Albuquerque.

Our last clinic welcomed nearly 100 participants and helped repair almost 200 items—and we’re excited to make this summer’s event even bigger.

If you have experience with sewing, woodworking, leatherwork, electronics, small appliances, jewelry repair, or general fixing and troubleshooting, we’d love to have you join us as a coach.

Help your community. Share your skills. Keep great items in use. Register today!

Volunteer: Feline Right at Home – Stressed Cat Behavior Modification Training – East and West

Description

The Feline Right at Home Program is designed to help shy, fearful, under-socialized, or behaviorally stressed cats become more comfortable with people and better prepared for adoption. Volunteers in this specialized role receive training in feline behavior modification (bmod) techniques and low-stress handling strategies used in shelter environments. Participants learn how to read feline body language, recognize stress signals, build trust through choice-based interactions, use positive reinforcement and enrichment tools, and apply confidence-building exercises tailored to each cat’s needs. Volunteers also learn techniques for reducing fear, encouraging engagement, and creating positive associations with human interaction. Through calm, consistent sessions, volunteers play a critical role in improving cats’ emotional wellbeing, quality of life, and adoptability while documenting behavioral progress and sharing observations with staff.

To be able to respond to this opportunity you should have taken the Cat Behavior Training online and have had a Cat Shadowing session with a Senior Volunteer - and remember you have to upload your certificates obtained by the end of trainings as qualifications. For a more comprehensive list of our opportunities divided by pet, listings of the trainings needed to volunteer and all of the details about how to continue your volunteering process with us, please visit www.oneabqvolunteers.com/awd

Volunteer: Summer Reading Teen Volunteer 2026 Ernie Pyle Library

Please read to the end before responding

2026 Summer Reading Program Teen Volunteer (Ages 13-18)

Unearth a Story – May 30, 2025 to July 25, 2026 Ernie Pyle Library

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Albuquerque Public Library!

After you submit your background check please email Jen Vossen at erniepyle@cabq.gov

What do I need to become a SRP volunteer?

Teens will need their own email separate from their parent or guardian's email.

City policy requires background checks for anyone aged 13+ before being considered to volunteer for the Library. There is no cost to the applicant. Background checks must clear before volunteers attend orientation in order to volunteer during the program.

What do SRP volunteers do?

Teen volunteers are a vital part of our summer programming. Volunteers help with all types of work, from signing up participants, to stamping Summer Reading Logs, and handing out weekly prizes. They may also be asked to contributing their own special skills on an as-needed basis.

Schedule: The summer reading volunteer program runs from May 30th until July 25th with a bonus volunteer opportunity on August 1st. The Ernie Pyle Library is open Tuesday-Saturday 10:00am- 6:00pm.  We would love if volunteers could work a minimum of one shift per week for the duration of the library’s Summer Reading Program, but we are very flexible and will work with your schedule.

Special events are where our volunteers will really shine. Volunteers may be asked for assistance during arts & crafts or storytime programs, helping with setting up and tearing down, and with sharing information about our events. Teen volunteers play an important role at the Library during the busy summer schedule.

Yay you made it all the way through!!  When you respond please tell us what your favorite book is!

The Ernie Pyle Library is not ADA accessible because the historic building and grounds include steps, narrow passages, and small spaces. The building was Ernie and Jerry Pyle’s 1,129 square foot home built in 1940. It is a National Historic Landmark and it is on the State, City and National registers of historic places. The closest ADA accessible Libraries include the San Pedro Library, South Broadway Library and International District Library.
