Stand Down is a military term originating from times of war when exhausted combat troops were given the opportunity to return to a place of relative security to rest and recover. Stand Downs today have become common as a means to care for and advocate for homeless veterans. To aid homeless veterans in regaining their dignity and self-respect, our help is required – our organizations offer a ‘hand up’ not a ‘hand out’.
During our event, over 40 services are represented from organizations such as the NM Department of Veteran Services, Workforce Connections, VA, NM Legal Aide and others who help Veterans and their families work out of homelessness. Flu shots are given, showers and haircuts. Food, clothing and toiletries are also provided.
Volunteer Opportunities include:
- Food Service (helping our Nutrition Coordinator prep and pack boxed lunch)
- Personal Shopper
- Clothing / Shoes Restocker
- Traffic flow
- Floater
- Food Tent (helping distribute boxed lunch / drink)
