JOB DESCRIPTION
CLASSIFICATION: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
POSITION TITLE: VOLUNTEER (Non-paying position)
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To serve as a volunteer support service to the City of Albuquerque Office of Emergency Management and other emergency agencies as needed, enhancing the effectiveness of community efforts in emergency response and special event support services.
SUPERVISOR RECEIVED: Under the general supervision of the CERT Program Coordinator and Leadership Team.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Volunteers in training, demonstrated experience and skills in specific tasks may assist the CERT Program Coordinator with supervision of inexperienced Volunteers.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF NON-EMERGENCY OR EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACTIVITIES: This is only an illustration of the different types of duties a Volunteer may be trained in and assigned to. The Volunteer position will not necessarily involve all of the duties listed, and may involve duties which are not listed. Activities (with examples) may include some of the following:
- Inform, educate, and train their neighbors on disaster preparedness.
- Respond to locally occurring disasters by strictly following the City of Albuquerque CERT protocols and support emergency personnel upon their arrival and request. Assist with planning and conducting training activities, including CERT basic training, quarterly trainings, and city-wide exercises.
- Assist in other programs, such as helping with special events; International Balloon Fiesta, Project Heart Start, Bosque Fire Patrols, etc.
- Work on special projects as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: CERT members should be able to comprehend the Incident Command System methodology and terminology, and have the ability to stay focused, to effectively deal with highly stressful conditions and events. Energy, desire, and time to donate in the different job assignments and activities needed to accomplish the organization’s mission.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: No specific experience or training is required prior to attending the CERT Basic Training. CERT training includes fire safety, utility control, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster medical operations, disaster psychology and disaster incident management.
All CERT volunteers must attend the CERT Basic Training prior to being allowed to perform the duties of a CERT volunteer.
