As part of its mission to build a clean and sustainable future for our City, Keep Albuquerque Beautiful is launching a study to identify strategies to reduce food waste in our community. Our team is looking for 100 households to participate in a week-long study to identify challenges people face when it comes to wasting food and to gather feedback on how the City of Albuquerque can help them prevent that waste in the first place.
According to the 2023 Climate Action Plan, an estimated 246.9 million pounds of food is wasted in the Albuquerque metro area each year. By identifying ways to reduce that number, we are working towards building a cleaner and more sustainable home for families.
Study participants will be asked to complete an initial survey to determine their current food waste habits. Participants will then receive a free food waste reduction kit with materials and resources to help lower the amount of food they throw away. For one week, participants will use these items as they see fit. At the end of the week, they will be asked to complete a final survey that will collect feedback on the usefulness of each item to reduce food waste.
The results and feedback from this week-long study will be used to identify the challenges individuals face with food waste and strategies for how the City of Albuquerque can help address those challenges to create a more sustainable environment.
The project will begin on Monday, June 24 when participants will be asked to complete the first survey. Food waste reduction kits will be available for pick up on Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21. The final survey will be due by Monday, July 1.
