Volunteer: Defend Potential by Mentoring (Mentor 2.0 Program) Hybrid

Youth in our community have an abundance of potential - they just need someone in their corner to help them realize it. There are hundreds of kids in New Mexico who are waiting for a mentor who will stand with them and help them ignite their potential.

Big Brothers Big Sisters exists to create positive change in our community by matching youth with adult mentors to build powerful friendships. Volunteers tell us that being a mentor is one of the best experiences that they have ever had. It’s also not as time consuming as they thought it would be.

Our Mentor 2.0 program is tailored for working professionals ages 21+ who hold an associates degree or equivalent work experience (or higher). You will be matched with a high school student at South Valley Academy. Through weekly messages and once-per-month get togethers at the school, you'll help your mentee prepare for high school graduation and develop their college and career readiness!

In the Mentor 2.0 program;

We ask that mentors message their mentees at least once a week (using a secure, online platform) and commit to volunteering for at least a year. You will get together with your mentee once every 4 to 6 weeks at their high school for an evening event that is organized and hosted by BBBS staff. You are not alone in this. Your Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Match Support Specialist and a network of volunteers will be there with resources, opportunities and support.

Interview, training, and a background check will be required.

Please provide phone number and email address so we can confirm your interest.

Volunteer: Spruce Park - Mutt Mitt Volunteer

No one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant found in storm water runoff? Pet waste left on sidewalks, streets, and lawns washes into storm drains and then to the nearest water body without treatment. Pet waste pollutes surface water by contributing harmful bacteria and nutrients impacting water. The solution is easy, pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly!

Help be a part of the solution, volunteer for the Park Management Mutt Mitt Program. It only takes a few minutes of your time to volunteer to refill mutt mitt stations in your neighborhood park. This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Volunteer: Pet Food Distribution - International District Library

Volunteer With Us: Friday Morning Pet Food Distribution

Do you love supporting animals?
Do you believe no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets?
Do you want to serve low-income and unhoused pet owners in the International District?

If so, we invite you to join us on Friday mornings.

Each week, Vets for Pets distributes dog and cat food, water, and basic pet supplies to families and individuals in need. We operate on two seasonal cycles: Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall. During our current Winter/Spring session, distribution begins promptly at 10:00 AM. When temperatures rise, we shift to an earlier start time to better serve the community and protect volunteers and participants from the heat.

Volunteers may meet us at 9:00 AM at 500 Wisconsin Street NE to help load and organize supplies, or meet us directly at the International District Library (7601 Central Avenue NE), where distribution begins promptly at 10:00 AM.

This is hands-on, community-facing work. You will help deliver essential resources, connect with pet owners, and ensure that families and their companion animals receive consistent support.

Whether you can serve regularly or occasionally, your participation makes a real difference.

Calling All Veterans: Your Service Still Matters

As a veteran, you carry with you the values of courage, sacrifice, honor, and unwavering camaraderie. You understand what it means to stand beside someone in their most vulnerable moments. Those qualities make you uniquely equipped to bring immeasurable comfort to fellow veterans receiving hospice care.

At Gentiva Hospice, we believe no veteran should face their final journey alone. By becoming a Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer, you can continue your legacy of service in a deeply meaningful way.

As a volunteer, you can:

Offer companionship and reassurance to veterans in their final days, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and honored. Share stories, memories, and understanding that only another veteran can provide—creating a powerful bond that brings peace and connection. Provide dignity, respect, and emotional support to those navigating end-of-life care, helping them feel safe and supported.

Your military service may have ended, but your ability to make a difference has not. Through your presence, your compassion, and your shared experience, you can bring comfort during one of life’s most sacred transitions.

Your service continues—through kindness, through presence, and through the honor you show to other veterans.

If you feel called to support our nation’s heroes in their final chapter, we invite you to join our dedicated team of compassionate volunteers.

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (Westgate Library)

Read to the DogsThank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to support and promote this important Library service.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Handlers bring their registered pet therapy dogs into the library and provide children with an opportunity to read aloud. The registered pet therapy dog sits calmly and quietly for a story, creating a relaxing atmosphere for children. This gives children an opportunity to practice their reading skills without fear or judgment. The adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents may sit quietly in the room with their child or take this moment to find a book and read just outside the program area. You can read more about it here.

Why dogs? The Public Library is pleased to provide this nationally recognized program to our families. In a 10 week study by the University of California, researchers found a 12 percent increase in reading fluency by one group and no improvement by the group that didn't read to dogs. It was reported by 75 percent of the parents that their children read aloud more frequently and with greater confidence after reading to the dogs. Children who practice reading have greater success in school and children who feel successful go on to read at higher grade levels. The Public Library hopes through this program children will relate to reading in a positive way and become lifelong readers.

How can I participate in this program with my dog?All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine CorpsAlliance of Therapy DogsWarm Hearts NetworkHigh Desert Therapy DogsPlease visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.

After completing the testing and registration process with one of the therapy groups listed above, you will need to upload the relevant documentation. This includes a copy of the membership card or certificate from one of the above organizations; and a current health form from one of the above listed organizations (proof of rabies vaccination is included on this form).

Additionally, you as a handler will need to pass a criminal background check and receive a Certificate of Compliance from library admin. Furthermore, the Certificate of Compliance can be completed by contacting the Library Admin at this email address: bwolff@cabq.gov.

City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

A new volunteer may not participate in the Program until you have been approved. After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the eleven (11) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

IMPORTANT: Once you have read all of the above, please contact Josh R. at 505-768-4462 to discuss opportunities and availability.

Volunteer: Downtown Temporary Dog Park - Mutt Mitt volunteer

This program has been very successful in keeping our City beautiful and encourages dog owners to clean up after their pets and allows them a convenient and sanitary way of properly disposing of their dog waste. It’s easy, just complete the online volunteer registration and Park Management will supply you with bags and a key.

Volunteer: Teen Library Volunteer (MN)

Description

Thank you for considering volunteering your time at the Main and Genealogy Library in Albuquerque!

Do you need to earn service hours for school, or for a special project? Do you want to gain work experience? Do you love Libraries and want to learn a little bit more about how they work?

Volunteers play an important role in assisting the Library to offer our services to the community on a continuing basis—and our teen volunteers are no exception!

Teen volunteers are selected based upon their qualifications, enthusiasm, and the needs of the Library at any given time.

What are some of the volunteering opportunities?

A sample of teen volunteer assignments is listed below. Not all opportunities are available at all times or at all branch locations. For a full list and descriptions, please ask at the Reference Desk.

Shelf reader Special Programs Assistant Book Displays

While we appreciate every person who wishes to volunteer at the Library, opportunities are sometimes limited. Please be aware that we may not have a volunteer position available at this time that suits your interests and abilities. If you are accepted as a volunteer, we may ask you to alter your duties to meet the changing needs of the Library. Additionally, if your work is no longer necessary or proves unsatisfactory, you may be released.

What are some of the necessary skills or abilities?

The skills we prefer our teen volunteers have experience with depends on the assignment. Here is a sample of skills we look for:

Good attention to detail Knowledge of alphabetical order Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal System Ability to match bar code and title Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to work independently Ability to ask questions when clarification is needed Ability to become familiar with all sections of the branch

Please note that not all skills are necessary for all volunteer assignments.

Have an idea for a Library community activity?

Our teen volunteers have great ideas for community activities (especially for youth)! Besides the opportunities listed above, if you have another idea for an activity you think your branch Library could benefit from that you could volunteer for, let us know. At various branches, we have activities like chess club, storytimes for younger children, science programs, book clubs (in various languages)—the list goes on! You are welcome to talk to the Youth Volunteer Coordinator at your local Library to discuss what's possible.

Agreement As a Library youth volunteer, you agree: To follow staff directions. To arrive on time and check in with staff upon my arrival. To inform the Branch as soon as possible if I am unable to volunteer during my regular schedule.

The Library agrees: To provide you with a safe work environment. To provide supervision and training by a member of the Library staff. To address your requests and concerns.

What else do I need?

A criminal background check will be required. City policy requires anyone who wishes to volunteer at the Library to consent to the performance of a background investigation by an outside agency. There is no cost to you.

You will also be asked to complete a short interview with the branch's Volunteer Coordinator.

**Please note: Based on the New Mexico Child Labor Laws, youth ages 12-15 may only volunteer for up to 4 hours per week during the academic school year; and, when school is out, for up to 20 hours per week.**
Thank you for considering the Library for your volunteer service!

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (Main Library)

Read to the Dogs

Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to support and promote this important Library service.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?

Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.

How can I participate in this program with my dog?

All dogs in this program are trained and registered in a dog therapy group. All Read to the Dog volunteers must belong to one of the following groups:

Southwest Canine Corps Alliance of Therapy Dogs Warm Hearts Network High Desert Therapy Dogs

Please visit these websites for more information about joining a dog therapy group.

If you have any further questions, please contact your Library Branch's Volunteer Coordinator.

1st Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Volunteer: Calling All Musicians

Many hospice patients find comfort and emotional relief in listening to live music, as it has the power to bring peace and foster a deeper sense of connection during challenging times. If you have a musical gift and enjoy playing an instrument, consider becoming a music volunteer. This rewarding role allows you to share your talent with those in need, creating an enriching experience not only for the patients but also for you as the performer.

As a music volunteer, you’ll bring your instrument with you during visits to hospice patients, offering them the opportunity to enjoy your music in a personal setting. You can play some of your favorite songs or take requests from patients, making the experience even more meaningful and tailored to their preferences. Whether it’s a calming melody or an uplifting tune, your music can provide a comforting escape and a source of joy for individuals who may be feeling isolated or distressed.

Volunteer: Read to the Dogs Volunteer (Tony Hillerman Library)

Read to the Dogs

Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor (and that of your furry companion!) to promote this important Library service.

Program Overview - What is Read to the Dogs?

Read to the Dogs is a program sponsored by the Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.

After approval, you may participate in the Read to the Dogs program at any of the six (6) participating Libraries. Please note that teams from the other agencies may be present at the same time you are.

Thank you for considering the Library and Read to the Dogs for your volunteer service!
