Volunteer: Special Collections Archives Assistant

Thank you for considering volunteering your time and labor at the Special Collections Library in Albuquerque!

Much of the Library’s work is routine, or requires extensive training provided by Library staff and volunteers. Volunteers play an important role in assisting the Library to offer our services to the community on a continuing basis. Volunteers are selected based upon their qualifications and the needs of the Library at any given time.

You have selected an Archives Assistant opportunity. Read more about it below.

Purpose: To assist library staff and customers to locate information in archival collections.

Qualifications:

A self-starter Computer literate, with knowledge of Microsoft Office Good attention to detail Able to follow oral and written instructions Able to work independently Able to ask questions when clarification is needed Able to label and describe archival items such as letters, postcards, clippings, and scrapbooks Able to type

Physical Requirements:

Good eyesight and small motor skills Able to work at a keyboard for an hour at a time Light to moderate lifting/pushing/pulling

Responsible to: Branch Volunteer Coordinator

Key Responsibilities:

To describe the contents of archival collections so that staff and customers can locate the information they contain. To protect archival materials through appropriate handling and storage. To search the library catalog.

You may also be asked to complete a short interview with the branch's Volunteer Coordinator and a brief shelving test.

Volunteer: Center for the Book Printing Press Volunteer (BF & JR)

Purpose: To teach children and adults about the history of the written word

Qualifications:

Scheduling flexibility - time involved varies according to demand for field trips Patience Willingness to work closely with a small group Access to email for scheduling purposes Able to learn and communicate about different eras in the history of writing Able to assist adults and children with simple activities that reinforce their learning Able to follow oral and written instructions Good with children and groups Good presentation skills Printing press experience required

Physical Requirements:

Good eyesight, hearing, and small motor skills Moderate lifting, pushing, pulling

Responsible to: Branch Volunteer Coordinator/Center for the Book Activity Coordinator

Key responsibilities:

Learn one or more areas of the docent curriculum well enough to teach the material to children and adults; help to run activity stations which include hieroglyphic stamps and letter illumination; perform rudimentary typesetting; and operate and clean a replica of a common printing press.

Note:  A background check will be required before you can be scheduled for a shift.
